Note: I am very sorry if this is the wrong area to be posting this Hello, My name is Andre and I am in-experienced in smithing and forging, but have the willpower and the desire to learn the art. I was wondering if anyone had any tips or advice for a novice like myself. I planed on starting by making small blades and other items such as silverware. Also, I plan on building a forge soon with the least amount of money as possible so any advice on that would be much appreciated. Thank you, -Andre
There is a plethora of information online about smithing: Railroad tie knife: Youtube: YouTube- Railroad Spike Knife Brake drum forge: Youtube: YouTube- Part one The Brake Drum Forge Greenpete's videos: Youtube: YouTube- Greenpete's Knife Making pt1of4 There are some great videos you can find. I am only familiar with the basics myself, since I never really paid much attention to what my father taught me about forging....but it is never too late to begin to learn something more. We also have a few knifemakers amongst us here, and Valkman makes his own line of exceptional knives. I am certain that you will find some answers here.
Welcome aboard, Andre. Valkman is "da man" on blades around here, and he has posted a lot of materials that will get you pointed in the right direction. As well, there are some interesting threads by various other members on forges, heat treatment, metals and tools of the trade on this forum. Well worth your time to read during snow storms. Questions welcome at any time.
Hey, there was a post in here with pictures of someone making a knife on there own anvil. I forget where it was but someone might recall. It made me want to go get an anvil.
I'm Lucky my Grandfather had an Anvil, Tongs, and lots of coal! I'm making a brake drum forge sometime here, I may post some pics.
Bear had put up a tutorial on how to forge a knife from a piece of coil spring. I've made several using 6 inches of coil spring to make a 8 inch knife Check out the One Brick Forge Sticky all the way to the end http://www.survivalmonkey.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3929&highlight=forge
