Cell Phone Disruptors

At the risk of sounding like I need the tin foil hat, I'm gonna throw this out there:
Myself and my workmate in SC covered the whole state between us. As a rule we spent our road time talking on the phone to each other and started noticing that when we would pass cops on the interstates with someone pulled over, we would lose signal and drop the call. Originally we just attributed it to sucky cell service here, but began noticing the vicinity of a cop with blue lights on when it happened. We've both moved on from that job, but I bring it up because he called me today to tell me about passing a Charleston city cop downtown with someone pulled over, and the call he was on to a customer dropped, and a block later he had full service again. We've discussed the possibility of cops using such technology to keep whomever they have pulled over from using their cell. Has anyone else encountered this? It's happened to me enough in the past 3 years that I'm considering putting the spectrum analyzer in the truck just to see.

The FCC has already fined folks for interfering with cell phones. Log it, video it, and if the police are doing it, burn the heck out of them. Contrary to many's beliefs, they are NOT above the law.

Those cell jammers are completely illegal so far as I can tell.

I am trying to think of any other possibility like something they would have that is wired wrong that would interfere. I think the mobile phones are 850/900/1,800/1,900 MHz, right? I don't know what the Police use but believe it's in the VHF/UHF range. I wonder if their UHF radios (300-3000Mhz) are stepping on the mobile? It would be funny if their radios are align incorrectly, over modulating... You might be starting a huge slander @Tempstar of SC finest! :): LOL!!

If that's a government gizmo, it's downright scary. What a great way to keep citizens from calling for help or sending off a video of their abductions.

These type devices are ABSOLUTELY Illegal, to operate, in the USA, by ANY State or local Entity. As are the StingRay Devices... If you can document, such interference via. Video, with Date & TimeSpamps, that Data can be cooperated via the Cellular Carrier, via their Network Diagnostics. Such Documentation needs to be forwarded to your nearest FCC Field Office, via OFFICIAL Complaint, in writing, preferably... The FCC takes such issues VERY Seriously, and if a Formal Complaint is filed, the Commission MUST Investigate, AND File an Official Report on such an Investigation. Though the FCC Field Agent does NOT have Police Powers, he can call on the local US Marshal to provide the muscle, should Illegal Equipment be found in operation, and such a case is a Federal Felony, with 5 Years & $50KUS Fine per each day of Documented illegal Operations.

If cops are jamming cellular channels, it's probably because they're afraid of IED's.

Slightly off subject but we encountered an 18 wheeler that interfered with our car radio. I we pulled along the truck twice and each time our radio went to static. I wondered why that happened.

It's quite possible he was running excessive power on his cb radio. That will cause that. The truck body also could have been blocking the signal from the tower.

What @techsar said -- but it could also be his engine or any number of things. Some fluorescent lights (shop lights) disrupt radio and I have noticed a set of lights in my house that disrupt my ham radio.
This is all noise and most of it is unintentional -- but if it is strong enough, and especially if it is intentional, is when the FCC gets mad.

The reasons cops are jamming cell phones is because people have started setting up networks to intercept cops who do not follow the law. It works like this:
    A cop pulls you over

You have a network of people to keep you safe such as this:
In Case of Thuggery, Call Porcupine 411
    or this
Film The Police | Cop Block

The cops buy one of these and put it in their trunk
Buy Portable Cell Phone Jammers, Mobile Phone Jammers For Sale

Then they are free to harass you to their hearts content. Who is going to stop them from doing so and even if you did know they have one of these how would you prove it and who would search their car?

Good question, and the only answer I know of is to drop a dime to the FCC with as much direct info you can get about the vehicle the device seems to be in. The FCC is stretched thin, but they will act if enough complaints turn up. The Federal Marshall's office will do the take down.

Only place that is allowed to jam cell (to the best of my knowledge) is a hospital, where it can interfere with equipment, or the recovery of patients. That could have changed in the last few years, so check your local laws before taking any advice off the internet.

I respect that in hospitals and put my phone on silent and make sure I don't use it.
Question: wouldn't the transmission of signals (on the same frequency of a cell phone) that a cell jammer puts out ALSO INTERFERE with hospital equipment?
I assume that how a jammer would work, but I really have no idea. Maybe my premise is faulty.

Correction: everything I'm reading is saying that active jamming is illegal, even for hospitals, but blocking is legal. They are building with materials that block RF and adding Faraday cage construction methods to existing spaces they want quiet (grounded metal mesh in or on the walls, to prevent the incoming signal befor it reaches the cell phones.)
I see no exemptions to the anti-jamming laws for hospitals. (Though it is admitted that there are many in use)
