Just looking for some other opinion's on SHTF with groups that have children. Now I have planned to try and make the adjustment a little easier as far as a few small games and some hard candy that will laast awhile and some of the MRE desert's. Im lookins for some opinion's on if you had to move through a hot zone with a child from infant to 12yrs old. Some idea's on what others has packed in the jump bags for ttheir children. Now my daughters jump bag has the same survival basic equipment as mine does like fire starters, water purification and so on even have the child gas mask and filter. I have been going over a hundred different way to move to safe house with children or staying put is the best option but in some cases that just would not work in my location. So any ideas would help me look to see if Im on the right track or if I need to adjust my plans and get new ideas from some of you guy's.

One special consideration I had to make is the nearby chemical plant and refinery having an accidental release. Because of that I have child sized NBC escape hoods as well as an infant NBC enclosure.

Alpha, first allow me to say, I hope and pray the Lord gives every one of us the wisdom and sense to spot a SHTF scenario as it is unfolding, in the early stages so those that have to bug out can do so safely. That being said, I know that the worst can happen at a moments notice. So we prepared for a bug out the following ways (I have 3 younger children that live with me and an adult child who lives up north).

We started boldly, at my house. We started by getting rid of all video games, battery operated toys, and television. Sounds radical, right? Well, the results astound me. My eldest daughter reads and tests 6 grades above her current grade level. My two younger children are on the same path. Imaginative play is a huge part of their leisure time, and they have regular chores that are expected to be done, no allowance. We also have a nightly family devotional reading (I do the reading and the kids and Mom listen and meditate on the reading, we discuss the reading afterwards as a family), as well as prayer time. Now this works for me and my family because we started very young.

That being said, small wooden toys, books, crayons, and 8x11" spiral drawing pads, as well as one small stuffed animal for comfort are in the kids BoB's. I also packed a small "memory card game" - with a current popular cartoon character on them, as well as cards, small spiral ring note pads, scrabble, dice, and pencils for family games. No battery operated or noise generating toys. At all. As for comfort food, my kids eat and love dried fruits (raisins, apricots, apple slices, etc.) and we are carrying 2 bags of hard candy for special treats.

We run drills (fire, home invasion, etc.) on a regular unscheduled basis. We are lucky that our children love the out-of doors and camping.

To me the utter nightmare is going to be those poor folks with pre-teen/teens that are so hooked on video games, computers, cell phones, iPods, etc. that the lack of these things when their batteries die, or the power goes off forever, will create a serious hindrance.

I think most everything can be managed, but one aspect I worry about is the noise factor, and moving from point A to B. (or any other time fwiw)

Kids at 2-7 are noisy period. The younger obviously the harder with crying, not much can be done other than training today for a possible tomorrow, but seeing how these are grandchildren, I don't get to work with them all the time but they would obviously be part of our group.

I like the hard candy aspect, I wonder how long Jolly Ranchers would last in a sealed container.. 50- 60 years? Hahaha.

FYI... you'll be carrying a 2yo more than they will be walking... that's when carts like this come in real handy... just let em ride on top

BTW these carts are great for hauling a field dressed elk out of the back-country too

Do the wheels on those packs seem small for "off road" use or is it just me...?

Well if you have to bug out just make sure you have several fishing rods ready, the kids will jump in the car and thing their going fishing.

I get tied up in one of those packs and roll off over a cliff (lol)

I like the idea about the family reading time Falcon I have one daughter thats 14 months in my home and baby moma and one daughter thats 18 yrs old that lives about 45 mins away. We try and give the baby any type of dried fruits and nuts she likes and use candy as a special treat and small amount. We listen to the radio with her and play time is with the type of toys I got growing up that the only thing it takes to operate is imagination and foot power. I hate seeing these kids 2 yrs old and walk across the room and can't breath and its because they watch cartoons and eat all day. We limit the tv time to like an hour or two a day.

We make our own carts... Hardware store can get you all the tubing you need... wheels have always been our problem... the best ones come from high end mountain bikes...

as my brother-in-law stated in his blog... cheap tires and 200 hundred pounds of elk meat will ruin your whole day
