Hey all, I was wondering how we could communicate with each other after the SHTF. How could we ID ourselves to one another? Any suggestions?

If its a total TEOTWAWKI situation then short wave radio would be the only realistic chance (if you had a power source) to comunicate with a group spread across the country or planet. IDing would be most easily done by screen names.

Now if you were talking in terms of IDing ones self for security purposes then easiest would be to have a predetermined challenge system set up. Maybe something like a challenge would be issued as a number then the correct response would be that number (as predetermined) say plus 4. To make it more secure you also could establish a second and third code like if the response is the challenge plus 6 it means the anwserer is under duress (like being forced at gun point to try to gain access) and if its minus 3 then it means the code was gotten from them by someone they didnt want you to let in and gave the code under duress. The last is most important if you may not recognize the person by sight or if they may send allies in, like I COULD do if say was trying to make my way home and had come to trust an ally enough to want them to be able to help my group and be helped even if I wasnt able to make it home. It can also be set up so that the challenger has a similar set of responses reliant on the anwser. To prove the base wasnt held by unfriendlies, or to let the person under duress know what was coming and what to expect, what predetermined basic plan to implement if they gave a duress anwser to the challenge. Basicly +2 mean 'I see them, duck and we shoot' -2 means 'gonna play along and suck them in for an ambush' or whatever. Obviously if an improper response is given to a challenge the person is not a friendly and is treated acordingly.

Now comes the problem, if the challenges and responses are discussed and or established in an unsecure manner...like on a web forum to top the list, then it would be worthless since anyone who happened to read the forum, unfriendly and friendly alike, would know it and be able to cruise through an otherwise secured perimiter.

is this just for communicating over the air waves(ie short wave) or for meeting other monkeys face to face for the first time post SHTF?
though i would advise treating everyone with a level of misstrust when meeting for the first time, post or preSHTF

One of the things that we have all stewed over here is how to contact like minded (and compatible) folks after TSHTF. It has bothered me to a degree that we can't really tell ahead of time who fits our molds close enough to throw in with post mess.

That said, comms and security have to be on the front burner at all times. We can be pretty sure this site is monitored, but whether the feds or trolls looking for easy marks (or to stir up us rabble) is always debatable.

Says me and maybe me only, each pocket of compatible monkeys will have to maintain a network separate from the other pockets. How that will be implemented remains a mystery to me, but for sure it will involve wireless comms both intra and inter pocket. (I said wireless, not necessarily radio.)

1 year post SHTF if you are still around and I hope that the most of us will be, then just about 99.9% of the people you meet will be real Monkeys of the highest order. Having seen and beaten all adverse conditions that the seasons have to offer. Here in Bavaria Germany, the winter will present the biggest problem, staying warm and feeding the family.

Yes I am new to this post but not to other's.In reality when it comes down to living or dying it will be very hard to trust anyone outside of blood kin or those you have served with.Even those that you know well may not be able to maintain a rationing system and steal and therefore put other's at risk. And as far as comunicating , well that will be very hard.I was looking at some of the new gear issued to the forestry service and I noticed that they have 14 inch colt M4's.Now if the government is arming the forestry service with M4's then I say if shit really hit's bottom then those with the most training will survive and they will not ask you for a password they wil just , as ordered , shoot to kill , or shoot on site.So let's pray that we are in the grace of our lord and that he gives us the intelligence to make it untill out time has come and we are called home.

Easy, I am wearing my Survival Monkey t-shirt as I type. When TSHTF I will wear it until it falls off. [js]

A nice electronic communication set up would be nice, but I am not really interested in studying for a test to become licensed to talk on a radio that I would only use rarely. The cheapest way would probably be with hand held CBs. Maybe we need a Monkey flag to fly from the roof tops. I have no doubt that in a real bad situation, cell lines will be flooded if not inoperable, and possibly land lines as well. CB's though if memory serves me correct do have a decent range (30+ miles with more coming via "tuning/power adding" which is illegal at this time I think) and can be bought fairly cheaply. It wouldn't be a bad idea to buy a used base, and maybe some hand helds for comms.

Not a bad plan!!! I have about a dozen of those left. I guess we could outfit folks we want to link up with in them for ID.

We could get "Planet of the Apes" masks and make monkey sounds.

If it is winter, we will not be able to see the T-shirts.

I think we need SM flags.

Don't dispair. A couple years ago, I was looking into ball caps --. After the move, I think I'll pick that up again.

I might have to adopt the Bonnie Blue Flag ala Melbo at Knob Creek, or one of my favorites the "Come And Take It" flag from Gonzales.

I know I will fly the Dont tread on me flag from my rooftop, along with an upside down stars and stripes.

Stick with the Gadsden flag. Flying the stars and stripes upside down is universally recognized as a distress signal, equivalent to an SOS.

ah okay, i knew it meant our country was in distress, not a personal so.
    I love this place...

Also the upside down american flag is a recognised symbol for U.S. militia. Worn as patches on BDU's and on vehicles for identification.

The whole numbers way of making contact like MM was talking about is used by some military units. One place it is common is on airfields, however it works slight different. Lets say the ideal number for access is 20. The Guard will say a number (we will say 11 this time) and the person trying to gain access will state a number that adds up to the access number (in this case the person trying gain access will need to say 9). Now there is also a pre-set number to mean that one is under duress and such as mentioned by MM. The only problem with numbers or any verbal communication is people who are equipped with bionic ears. These little microphones can pick up noises from great distances and maybe able to hear the challenge words and use that to gain access. Now I suggest using a combination approach for verifiying ones identity. Lets go with we are using this as a way to communicate amongst different groups of monkeys. The first step is to have ones weapon(s) holstered and held in a very specific position. The next step would be to wear an identifiying item of clothing or uniform. The third step is a verbal challenge (think numbers or pass word) and the fourth step being photo identification that is pre-agreed upon verfied against a list. The fifth and final step would be to say your screen name which is also on that list. The theory being that with all 5 steps in place, it would be rather hard to have that compromised. You could incorporate a requirement to make radio contact before physcially approaching ones gate. So that even if someone else hears your call sign / sn they still need to produce an approved ID that matches the names on the list. Speaking of this list we could make one ahead of time with a copy of peoples ID's they are going to use next to their real name and SN. This will help to elminate the risk of compromise even more so. The unfortunate thing is no matter how complex one makes access, there will always be a way for it to be compromised.

This is a very interesting topic that really needs serious individual thought. FireRanger and others have good ideas. The only 2-cents I have has been brought up by others: you must assume this board is compromised. Currently, there is no reason to think NVBeav isn't NVBeav, but an opportune time hasn't presented itself yet.

There are a lot of great people and discussions that take place on this message board. The gleaning of information and ideas is a by-product of meeting other like-minded families and individuals here.

FYI, I am working on a White Paper, that I hope to publish to my Monkey Friends in October. It will cover most of these issues of Ident and Authentication for Monkeys to use when setting up a Face-Meets between groups for the first time. It will cover what I am versioning "The MonkeyNet" which will a basic Comms Network infrastructure that Monkeys can use to set up various Comms between, Individuals and Groups, using whatever resources are available to each group. It will cover AoO's (Areas of Operations) like Squad, Local, Group, Regional, and Monkey Wide. We have the expertise on the Monkey, to do this, already, Including some expertise in encryption, if folks will come together on a common and agreed Plan. So think about it, and see if the issues of Comms to your fellow Monkeys is of interest, and when published, see if it fits what you think will work. .... YMMV....
