Windows operating system forums on techy websites may help

the authentication code could be on the the computer itself if the operating system was preinstalled before you bought the computer....it should have the windows logo / authenticity features on the label.

If you installed the operating system yourself from install disks that you purchased....then the authentication number should be on the software packaging somewhere.....

you could raise the issue in the technical forum, where computer techies may perhaps be hanging about. Melbo or ghrit seem to know a bit about such things.

    Moved to the Tech forum.

What chelloveck said is what you need to do.

If you don't have the auth code, a call to M$ may be needed but they may tell you that you have bootleg copy and need to by a new copy.

Or, ditch M$ and load Ubuntu :)

Someone else had that problem not too long ago. Dunno if it's fixed. Either way, it's beyond me. Re-boot and cross your fingers.

Had to go get on another station ,I bought the disk and the package is long gone .
I payed through the nose for the disk from Tigert direct it was over $140 so there shouldn't be any problems .
Don't know how long it will take to get this fixed but if I have to I'll take it someplace that younger people can look at it and hopefully get it fixed .

I've rebooted ,if that means shut it down and restart .

Here is how to fix it . . .

Unplug it. Unplug all the various wires and cables.

Take it outside an place it next to a big tree. back off about 25 paces and shoot it with the biggest gun you have, about 20 times.

. . OK. So it won't actually fix the computer. But I'd bet it'll make YOU feel a lot better. :D

Well it took talks with Microsoft for over 2 hours and I find out that it was a hacker using a Microsoft logo and error message that got me to hit an update and it corrupted my system .
They are having problems with some a-hole who is using this to get people to buy some software but I was lucky and couldn't even log on long enough to go there.
Anyway I got fixed and lucky that it didn't screw things worse .

Hi Cephus, made that same mistake a couple yrs back. Had to have the pooter guru zap it and start over. I do not download any "update" without checking with the company and asking others if it is safe. Tired of losing data and saved stuff. I have a memory stick and also an external hard drive (Passport) that I keep updated occasionally. Cheap money.

buying microsoft products is supporting one of the worlds biggest thieves
gates altered the core of a pirated copy of CP/M and called it MSDOS
then with other mods it became windows 1 thru 98
they lost a court battle not long ago when sued by the owners of CP/M
and that is why there is no longer any support for anything pre-xp
so when those crooks demand validation of purchase ask them for theirs

This has happened to millions of Microsoft users.
Just spend 2-3 hrs downloading Ubuntu 10.04 for free.

I had Windows Update screw my system up a while back, it wouldn't even boot into Windows! I got it into safe mode and then used system restore - and it worked! I hadn't had system restore work before but it sure did this time and I'd try that if you have it.
