I have only been a member of survival monkey for a few weeks now. I was lookng for a place to post ideas and get opinion; but like most places people meet, their are alway people who want to throw a wrench in the machine. I recently deleted my post "A knife is personal". One person wrote it was too speechy and another wrote they are trying to find a reason for my thread. Opinions I understand, but if your going to just critque a post, stop reading! No one is twisting your arm to read. I don't really care for buck knives, but if it works for you "God bless". Sometimes, I find there are individuals that hangout around these places and have no life or too much time on their hand. They never really post anything because their not brave enough to put themself out there and be critque themself. But that is just my opinion. Ha ha ha.

As one "size" doesn't fit all feet or needs, knives are similar to shoes. Because it doesn't fit their needs or preference some folks get real picky about their favorite. @chimo and I disagree about PMs and agree on many more subjects.
Everyone is here to yak, learn, share and have a good while growing or helping another grow.

    @Bishop
    Offered some good advice.

My knife criteria is cut first, cut fast, cut efficiently, and not many blades fill every function. I have used sharpened stones and some of the finest examples of blade-smithing available and everything from butchers knives, to dime-store pen knives, machetes, swords, dirks, daggers, switchblades, Bowies, bayonets, and broken glass...naturally I have my favorites but form follows function so the ones I usually carry can multi-task. The one thing I have learned is that just like firearms, ask a hundred different experts and get a hundred different answers.

Don't take it personal... There are some really interesting people on this forum and, for the most part, they get along really well...I think mainly because most are mature and they believe that everyone has the right to a different opinion. Personally, I have found them to be very accommodating and understanding. I am constantly saying dumb things out of ignorance of being out of the country for years and someone will always take the time to explain to me. Hell, I feel more at home outside the USA than in it but folks here are helping me to transition in a big way. And, on the other side of the coin, living so long outside the fish bowl and looking in, I can give a different, and first-hand perspective on many topics.

So... We all come here for different reasons and I believe most of it is to find like minded people which we can have intelligent conversation. This is what you will find here. And, you will ALWAYS take away more knowledge than you can give...

Oh! BTW I am a newbie also...And, I do agree 'a knife is personal' but didn't reply to your post because at the time there were some really hot topics that had my interest...and I was sick with the damn flu for almost 3 weeks and was running on fumes.

A knife is personal. It is a tool that you need to feel secure with. It should be something like a favorite coat, serves your purpose and is comfortable. I must have missed your thread prior to you deleting. I personally would rather read a speechy post on a knife rather then half the non-survival posts that are on this survival forum. Like all families, groups or gathering there are and will always be some that like to throw a wrench in our machine or refuse to stop and try to grasp the point. I say carry on.

I want to thank everyone for your post. Cowards would not have posted. Motomom thanks. You must be a super-mom. Moms are unrated, but so are daddies. Hell there is no such as parent these days. All I got to say.

Nope, Wrong.... There are plenty of "Parents" still raising children, in the Old Ways... You just haven't been around long enough to find them.... and get to KNOW them....

There are some, dunno 'bout plenty. Point taken, tho'. One of the sure and certain ways to find them is go to a couple PTA meetings, you do NOT need kids to attend last I knew. Most school board meetings are open to the public as well, and that'll give you a sniff of the best and the worst.

OR, Head to a local Church, (Catholic, Methodist, or Mormon, etc) on Sunday Morning... and watch for the families that come, and sit together, on the same Pew...

Like someone else mentioned above, just because one person didn't take away something after reading your post, doesn't mean someone else didn't. Don't delete 'em, for sure. Hang in there, man. It's all good.

@timberwolf50 There are plenty of blogs around online if all you want is a place to post ideas and receive opinion. On any forum, there's a certain etiquette to follow since every participant is a member of the whole, and this will vary from site to site. Around here, it's fairly laid back and very welcoming compared to many forums available. The Survival Monkey is a survival forum and information archive, and the information here is made freely available to the world and has been the work of a relatively small group, comparatively speaking. One could spend many weeks just going through the archives searching for information alone, and perhaps this is one reason why we remain a steady traffic site on the world wide web. If you intend to add to the information here, you are under no obligation besides obeying the CoC and remaining civil. If you find you are not receiving the kind of response you had hoped, then maybe your chosen approach could use some adjustment to a more positive focus so you may receive the encouragement you are seeking, or positive feedback to assist in the discussion. The bottom line is, if you make a premise and you're wrong there's a good chance somebody is going to politely argue for a better one. We do have a healthy number of experienced members around here, and most do like to maintain a sensible set of parameters and a solid foundation of truth to work from.

Good luck with your stay here.

I sincerely doubt Borkor or anyone else is telling you that you do not belong here. Basically, same as any forum type site, survival monkey has admins that do that by banning a person.

Just join with us and enjoy.

What we would hope you do is learn from all the resources here (as much effort has been contributed by all over the years), provide further contributions as you can to the knowledge base and partake of the conversation as a member of the community, not as an adversary or competing interest.....

Sometimes even family members grate on each other.... thick skin is required when dealing with ones that you may disagree with. WE all have a voice, but WE all should listen even better to what is being said... Sometimes there is no disagreement, just a different way of saying the same thing.

We all have a role in our community... what is yours... and if you choose, bring it to the table. There are no winners or losers here, just folks looking to do better tomorrow, than they may be doing today in their preparedness for what may come!!

Don't be discouraged TimberWolf....it's not necessarily any easier for the old and bold (or ruthless and toothless) here...particularly if advocating for unpopular causes or criticising popular ones. It's just a fact that some people will get butt-hurt if one doesn't agree with their pet conspiracy theory, or criticises their favourite edged, all purpose cuttin', slicin' 'n' dicin' implement.

Stick with the monkey tree....for every one who disagrees with you, there's probably some who'll agree with you, a bunch more kibitzing from the sidelines, and a whole bunch more enjoyin' the spectacle as fellow monkeys throw monkey poo at each other.
