So far, I've only got Vista...was considering upgrading but I'd like to know
whether it's worth it. Does anyone run Windows 7 and what has your
    experience been with it?

I run Windows 7 on 2 systems in the house. One is devoted to serving as a media center, and the other is a laptop I'm using right now.

I can't say a whole lot about Vista, but Windows 7 Ultimate is a great Operating system.

    Thanks, Melbo.

I am hoping that a thread dedicated to Windows 7 is a good thing???

    I think it's a good thing ;)

Windows 7 is the first Gates project I support, even if I am still saving a small bit of skepticism for Gestapo auto shut-off coding hiding somewhere waiting...watching....

Nah. Windows 7 is streamlined, and the 'N' version I have is very plain and fast -just how I like an OS to be. I haven't had any problems yet.

All I know is that ME was a catastrophe, XP was fairly good, and the jury's
still out on Vista...haven't used it long enough to draw any firm conclusions....yet.

I may try 7 if my tablet crashes and needs re-formatting. [newb]

I am not unhappy with XP so I don't know when I will upgrade.

With Vista, you don't have to wait for it to crash to upgrade to Windows 7. Just perform the upgrade option on the install and it will upgrade the OS files without reformatting the hard drive just fine.

Conagher, does that upgrade require buying the win 7 upgrade disk? What if any, would be the advantage of upgrading from xp or even a vista machine to win 7? I have a DOS program, Quickbasic that will run and compile in XP, but not on a Vista computer. Am I to assume, Quickbasic would not work on a Win 7 computer either?

I have Linux on this laptop, XP on my netbook and an old computer in the garage has both Linux and XP, my wife's computer has Vista on it and she is always wanting me to come check something on it. I don't care much for some of the things Vista does, why I'm not anxious to upgrade to 7 if it is not more like XP.

    Good thread Heather

7 runs a mini substrate of XP in the backround if necessary. You can install apps and if they don't work, 7 will ask you if you would like to install them in compatibility mode. You can select whichever version of Windows you want and it usually works.

I would move from Vista to 7 in a second with no questions asked. They fixed everything in V that was a problem.

I friggin love Windows 7! Well, at least compared to their past mentioned train wrecks. It seems as though they are trying to copy Mac though. But all in all, im satisfied.

It's definitely a step up from vista, but now I'm wishing I had spent a few hundred extra and got a mac. Seems to freeze up more and more lately. It's only lasts 10 or 15 seconds, but it's starting to get annoying. And I'm sure I don't have any viruses or adware. Oh well.

Check your memory utilization and CPU percentage and see if one of them is being hit very hard. How much ram and what speed of CPU are you running?

Check your processes in the task manager and see if a process is robbing your system of resources.
