Latest Human Death of Bird Flu Found in China
    USAgNet - 03/06/2006

China's Guangdong Provincial Department of Health announced on March 3 that a man died from suspected highly pathogenic bird flu, Southern Daily, a local newspaper, reported. If confirmed, this would be the first case of human bird flu ever found in the province. Unsubstantiated reports have suggested bird flu outbreaks occurred in the province although there has been no official report of bird flu in the southern province.
The 32-year-old unemployed male victim, surnamed Lau, was a resident in the city of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province.

The man came down on Feb 22 with fever and pneumonia-type symptoms. His condition got out of control rapidly, and he died on March 2.

Results of a preliminary epidemiological investigation indicate the man had visited a local farmer's market a few times, and stayed for long at a time in a feed store near a poultry-slaughtering booth.

A specimen from the man was tested by the provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and the results suggest the man was positive for bird flu virus (A/H5N1) nucleic acid.

According to the National Standard for Highly Pathogenic Bird Flu in Humans, experts from the Department of Health came to a preliminary conclusion that this is a suspected case of human bird flu.
