I can sympathize with the woman's sentiments...but, my feeling are that she doesn't have a leg to stand on. If you're using the services of a utility provider, it would seem that you would have to agree to their rules or find an alternative provider, which is usually not possible with electricity.

The outcome of this should be interesting.

Some utility companies allow you to opt out of their smart meter program. She should have looked into that.

While I can sympathize with her, what is the so-called big deal? You create a record every time a meter reader comes and records your monthly readings, it is then compiled and stored with the rest of your data that the utilities have on you.

Now I would rather have a smart reader than have a complete stranger enter onto my property so as to read the meters. This gives them a chance to look into your house more directly and to poke their noses where they don't belong.

ditch witch I do stupid crap, so you don't have to

The utility worker should NOT have shoved her out of the way. I get that he probably runs into plenty of folks who try to keep him from doing his job and has long since lost his sense of humor on it. We used to have people park their cars on top of the lid over the water meter so we couldn't read/disconnect it, or ones who would chain their nasty tempered dog where it could reach the meter reader. The minute she became confrontational the worker should have called in and requested support, either from a higher up or a cop, for this very reason. Some people would have shot him and called it self defense.

And crap like that? Is one of the driving forces behind utility companies wanting to switch over to radio meters in the first place! That, and the ability to get a few names off the payroll.

Me I don't really care one way or the other. As it is now, I have a guy who looks over my fence with a pair of binoculars for the electric meter. Curtains keep him from seeing in the house. Gas and water meters are outside the fence.
