Taking Action to Allow Import of M-1 Rifles from Korea
<HR style="COLOR: #eaefe3; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #eaefe3" SIZE=1><!-- / icon and title --><!-- message -->I'm sure many of you have heard about the large number of M-1 Garands and M-1 Carbine rifles that the South Korean government is attempting to sell to a US importer.

Little detailed information available about this issue, but here's what we know so far:

Korean Times: US opposes Seoul’s bid to sell old rifles

Fox News: Obama Administration Reverses Course, Forbids Sale of 850,000 Antique Rifles

It appears that the import ban is politically motivated. According to the Fox News article, the Obama Administration approved the import of the rifles, then quietly reversed their decision in March of this year.

That said, let's get a letter-writing campaign going to gather factual information as to why the import was denied and to demand pressure be applied to allow the rifles to be imported in compliance with current regulations. Here's a letter I sent to my two Senators and my Representative. Please feel free to excerpt or steal the whole letter for your purposes.

Please report back any concrete information you receive from your congresscritter so we can determine the next steps that should be taken.

In the last few months, the recreational shooting community became aware that the Obama Administration has reversed its previous decision to allow the South Korean government to sell US-manufactured World War II era rifles to an importer in the United States. This importer would then presumably offer these rifles for sale to law-abiding collectors and shooters in the USA in compliance with all existing regulations governing firearms.

A FOX News report indicates that the Obama administration has blocked their import for reasons that are unreasonable and misleading. You can see the article here: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2010...ique-m-rifles/)

It’s important to know that there is plenty of legitimate precedent for selling historical M-1 Garand and M-1 Carbine rifles to law-abiding citizens who can legally purchase firearms. The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP, http://www.odcmp.com/), a federally-chartered corporation that serves youth through gun safety and marksmanship activities, partially finances their operations by selling such rifles to citizens from US government stocks.

These relics were paid for by our tax dollars, and were carried by our fathers, grandfathers, uncles, brothers, cousins and friends, the cornerstones of “the greatest generation”. These firearms served admirably in the defense of our country and our allies, and I'm asking for your help in facilitating their return to the United States so current and future generations can enjoy and honor their history.

I request that you speak to the Obama administration to demand that they allow these firearms to be imported and sold to American citizens in compliance with current regulations. Identical firearms are legally sold to civilians every day through the CMP without incident, serving a vital and honorable role in teaching gun safety and marksmanship. The Obama Administration's objections are clearly motivated by political ideology rather than reasoned analysis.

We in the millions-strong shooting community appreciate your staunch support of Second Amendment rights, and hope to hear a statement from you soon in regards to this important issue.

    Sincerely,

    XXXXXX </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
EDIT: Adjusted letter to include better information which has come to light since the first draft.

I like the form letter. I would, however, also like to point out the segue you landed into; something they wanted you to do so they pull a "gotcha" on you.

    ...and it goes like this..
Hillary: Gee, we banned the import of these guns, legally and these guns were being sold. We think they can lend themselves to misuse and criminal use, that's why we banned them. So now that we can say that legal use of guns can end up in misuse and criminal use, and we legally banned imports, perhaps we can legally ban guns, period.

Yeah, it's a crazy thought process, but it's a rough guestimate of how they're going to try to maneuver this piece of poop.

Maybe South Korea should clean them and store them so they can defend themselves (instead of American Lives) the next time the north attempt to whoop their arse. Maybe South Korea, should sell them to their general population and promote a korean 2nd amendment. As this was an initial intent of our 2nd, so the people could aid in defense of the country as the young US didn't have an army to protect from a full out french or english invasion.

UGRev, are you a politician? lol, you have their thought process down pat it seems.

    From GOA:

Obama Administration Moves to Block the Sale of M1s to Law-abiding Americans
-- State Department intimates that these historic relics may be melted down

    Friday, September 10, 2010

Apparently, things are going so well in the Middle East that the State Department now feels it can turn its attention to banning the lawful possession of firearms by American citizens.

In a little-noticed decision in March, the Obama administration reversed an earlier decision and moved to block the importation of 857,470 lawful M1 semi-automatics which were being sold by South Korea in an effort to raise money for its military. According to Hillary Clinton's State Department, this action was taken because the M1's "could potentially be exploited... for illicit purposes."

Even worse, a spokesman for the State Department left the impression that the valuable historic relics could even be melted down, as Clinton's husband did during his administration. Suffice it to say that this is just another reiteration of the same anti-gun political theatre. And the cheers coming from anti-gunners like Dennis Henigan of the Brady Campaign are ample proof of that.

Possession of these guns by Americans is lawful. They are antiques of historical interest, particularly for those who, unlike Clinton and her husband, served this country honorably in America's foreign wars. And anyone wishing to acquire one would have to go through an Instant Check.

If any American, going into the November elections, had any doubt that Barack Obama and the Democratic Party leaders hate guns and have contempt for the Second Amendment, this is proof. Reps. John Boozman and Paul Broun are submitting a letter to State Department Secretary Hillary Clinton -- demanding that this unlawful decision be reversed.

This is starting to pick up some momentum, I have seen it in several national outlets. Let's keep the pressure up.

I don't understand why they ban the import...It's not like you don't have any guns in US so the import of those would arm the population...There has to be something else behind it...

see my post above. They are trying to hook in some precedence for banning guns.

After having read numerous books authored by nutjob extremists who jump at every chance to justify gun grabs, I can only say that, in their minds it is perfectly justifiable to refuse more guns because they believe more guns equals more violent crime. Common sense speaks otherwise, and so do the facts and data supporting legal gun ownership in America.

These socialists don't need a "reason" to negate gun ownership, they just act like a pack of crazed apes and cry about people being shot, expecting the public to buy their deluded story of inanimate objects causing harm. The nay-sayers believe the gun is a deadly device that can be stolen from your home and used in crimes --they never consider the fact that an armed populace is a polite one. It's all a psycho-babble game directed at confiscating the weaponry of the people so the full socialist regime change and police state can roll out in full force unhindered.

I see no ulterior motive aside from the denial of added firearms being shipped to the United States for the civilian market.

I contacted both senators for my HOR state. They are both pro-2nd amendment even though one is a Democrat. I expect to receive a reply in the next few days. I will post them when they arrive.

Bane, the whole ideal of "Gun Control" here in The States has never been about the guns - it's totally about CONTROL. The misadministration are control freaks. [stirpot]

Yes, I see...In my country is about guns...but it's really stupid... I mean, I can get an anti-tank missile for 100 euros on the black market, but I can't get a handgun legally...go figure...
Our law states that even military and police, unless in uniform, or officially under cover, are forbidden to carry their service weapons...
So, everybody is killing each other with illegal guns... ROFL!

Good Rifle either way, 308 or 30cal carbine, what I would really love to own is a GI issue 308 M14.
