10-22 Ruger rifle & 40 grain ammo

This has been bothering me for a while and I hope someone can clear this up for me:

I have read in multiple places that shooting 40 grain lead nose ammo through a Ruger 10-22 is a bad idea. I've read probably 4 or 5 forums saying that the twist rate in the barrel is not high enough. I have an older model 10-22; not sure exactly when it was made but my dad had a couple & gave them to me & my brother.

I've shot probably 50 rounds of Aguia 40 grain through mine & I don't see any issues. Can someone confirm or debunk this myth?

    Of course, my 22A S&W & Chiappa 1911-22 love the 40 grains...not surprising.

    Thanks in advance all.

Sounds like BS to me - 40 grain is a standard weight for the .22LR - any rifle with a rate of rifling that cannot handle it wouldn't sell many. I see no problem with using lead bullets vs. plated either. I have known some semi-autos that don't care for the flatter-tipped Winchester HP bullets, but my 10-22 handles any ammo I've put through it in the last ten years. Just try several brands and types - the rifle will show you what it prefers.

If it is .22 LR, it will work. Now, if you are having problems with something like, say...Swartklip heavyweight 45 gr., I might see a point. Still, I haven't had problems even with Swartklip, and that ammo hasn't been made in quite a while. Glad I still have a decent stock.

Yeah, there's a lot of fluff on forums.

I thought the higher twist rate (1:9) was for something like the 60 grain bullet. With the 40 grain being the standard for 22lr bullets, they should stabilize in just about anything.

I thought it was kinda BS myself, so I'll keep shooting 40 grains in everything I have - 10-22 rifle, 22A & 1911-22 pistols. I didn't notice any issues with the few I shot through the rifle; I've shot many through the pistols. I had only seen 20 something & 30 something grain rounds in stores here. I found those 40 grains at a gun show.

While we're on the 10-22 subject, could someone suggest some good sling mounts & a sling? I've seen may people like Uncle Mike's equipment.

If in doubt fire a box of 40s at different ranges. Use a white background target, any tendency to keyhole will show up on the white paper as a shot that has tumbled.

I shoot sub sonic 60s all the time in the correct twist barrel and the 60s are all lead and have a larger bearing area, no problem, just extra varmints on the ground.

I've been shooting 10/22's for a little while and have never heard of any problems with bullet weight/stabilization. I've shot probably 50K rounds of 36-40gr .22lr in the 10/22 that I've had since 1975. I've even shot 22 Short (single loaded at the front of the magazine) and Stinger ammo in the 10/22 without any issues. It shoots just about anything, but shows a definite preference for Federal Auto Match, which is 40gr.

Rich Seal, this might be what you're looking for. Ones I got years ago were crudely made, and parkerized. I cut the side mount off and ground it flat before painting the whole thing flat black. The swivels will take a standard GI width sling. I've also seen sling swivels added to the original barrel band.

HD --- lucky for me the Federal Auto Match 40 grains is what I bought, so we'll see. the only 40s that i've used thus far has been the Aguia that i picked up @ a gun show. They shot well, but they had some feed issues due to the short shell casings. the Federals look longer in the case.

Thanks for the link for the sling mounts. much appreciated.

I feel like a complete doofus...the entire time I was debating 40 grain LN rounds, I actually meant 60 grain LN rounds. I'm sorry for wasting everyone's time. 40 grain ammo performs well all around. The Federal Auto Match made me happy today.

Now that my head is screwed on straight, opinions on 60 grain ammo & a Ruger 10-22 rifle? It performs well in my 1911-22; feed issues with my 22A, but those are pistols. The only 60s I have seen & used were Aguia. Any other makers out there? Again, sorry for the brain-fart.

Uh...bigger isn't always better. If you're not using a suppressor, I just don't see the point in a 60 gr. 22LR round. I am certain they cost more, are slower, may cause failure to feed, and generally aren't as easy to find.

Confusing 60 gr. ammo with 40 gr. is kind of a big screw up...second from the right is your 60 gr. bullet.

It's motsomuch the boolit weight but the fact that it's a RNL (as in lead)
Using copper wased/plated ammo will greatly reduce the amount of leading in the barrel

Easy to find, online, cost no more, no failure to feed in my 10-22, no leading due to the speed, much more quite than the Hyper Junk.

Hollow point Hyper Junk is sold for those who missed most of the animal and need all those bits and pieces of the bullet in hopes of hitting a vital spot.

Example> Three nights ago I hit a Badger, center mass, and he huffed and dropped like a hog hit with a 12 gauge slug, all four legs splayed out and he then moved about 6 feet. Dead by the time I got to him.

It's the difference between a 45ACP and a Parabellum, like hitting a Possume with a tree trunk instead of a soda stray.

All the Hype about Hollow points and high speed .22s can be disproved by using a box of 60s.

Those that assume need to apply some simple Physics in the real world.

And I repeat, with emphasis since it is needed: If you're not using a suppressor, I just don't see the point in a 60 gr. 22LR round. I am certain they cost more, are slower, may cause failure to feed, and generally aren't as easy to find.

Footnote: *Virtually everything is available online* Obviously, to some...this needs to be clarified.

I stated all fact, not my personal opinion. You may act like GunKid all you want, but I am not here to try and argue the "best ammo", just honestly report on what the facts are. Take notice, I used bold, enlarged type so you don't miss the point. If you LOVE the 60 grain 22 LR --GOOD ON YOU! I just don't see it as a practical round considering how popular a 40 gr. 22 LR round is in comparison. If the 60 Gr. is better by any measure you have described, GOOD! BEST OF LUCK! BE WELL AND PROSPER!I suppose one day when the manufacturers come around and realize how awesome the 60 Gr. round is for the .22, they will perhaps mass produce it and sell it in every store. I also suppose one day, people will bulk stock it and use it avidly. Today is not that day --but HERE'S TO YOU FOR BEING AWESOME!

No problem, I got your point.

That being you know how to change font size and type.

Also that you have not used the 60s.

    So much for your facts.

You sure try hard to denigrate other members and their post.

    UNHAPPY are you?

I am not the one with the problem. I do believe you're the one who chimed in first, quoted my post in some attempt to negate everything I typed, even though I left plenty of room in my statement to be seen as neutral. Now you reply with ad hominem attacks. Not good. But, I am not subtle, so no hard feelings.

I would say this ends here. Back to the topic, please.

I see you have done your usual MO turn around and now want to appear as the injured party.

Please note that the use of the graphics in your reply to the Forum Member who disclosed that he had typed in the wrong bullet type perfectly fits "
Abusive ad hominem (also called personal abuse or personal attacks) usually involves insulting or belittling one's opponents in order to attack their claims or invalidate their arguments, but can also involve pointing out true character flaws or actions that are irrelevant to the opponent's argument. "
when you belitted him. As well as the use of text that left no doubt in how little you thought of his post.

You provided no facts in any of your post, only opinions and your statement "I left plenty of room in my statement to be seen as neutral."
is just more of your usual BS when you have been backed into a corner.

In short you exhibit all the traits of an Internet Troll who wishes only to destroy.

Hard feelings? That would be a waste of my time.

You need to get a grip and grow up.

Not true. I am not thinking of myself, but for the SM forum.
It's nice of you to use your own feelings to protect other people, but you are only attempting to use this as an excuse for your own benefit.
I cleared that up in my last post, but you seem to really be emotional about a 60 gr. round. I am sorry you feel this way.
Take a look at my profile. I have been here since the first few months this forum started. If I were a troll, I would have been gone a long time ago. Take a little time to get to know people before you rush to judgement.
Let's move on. No sense in being this way around here. I may have rubbed you the wrong way, but you don't need to take this personally. If you still wish to debate your feelings, feel free to private message me. The open forum is not the place to spew attacks.
    Thanks. Moving on.

I see you are still using the same format as last time.

" I may have rubbed you the wrong way."

Hardly a sincere answer if you have to repeat it over and over.

Some Trolls find a home and work just on the edge of the Moderator's limits. This of course they do by baiting others into loosing their cool and then, as you do, saying they are sorry and asking to kiss and make up.

    You guys never change.
