Got a chance at a mossberg .410 pump; in really nice shape for $275.00.
Be fun just don't know if I "need" it more than something else.I think it'd Be a great "small game getter".

I think they are worth having, but they are far more expensive ( shell wise) here, than 12 or 20 gauge! I used to have one and it was ok for squirrels and rabbits...some times I usd it for dove or quail. Then I went to a Savage O/U 20 gauge with 22 magnum. I gave my .410 away and used my O/U exclsively.
It all depends....as far as use for larger game and cost wise. No, it's not great.
It's like making comparison's to 16 or even 28 gauge.
I like 20 gauge, but now I only use my 12's. Even now the 20 ga. is more costly for rounds but sure kicks the heck out me a LOT less than my 12's!
It just depends on the use, weight and if you reload...It can be good or it can be a boat anchor! (One man's junk is another man's gold!)
    Tough call!

Good for the younger survivalists or small women. Not everyone can handle a 12 gauge. My wife (5', 100 lbs) won't shoot a 12 gauge. I suppose I could get a 20 gauge, but I have never seen the point.

ive got an old savage m24, 410/22 combo gun. love it. i dont use it that often but its maily for rabbits and teaching little ones how to shoot. ive learned how to build a loading tool out of a small block of wood and a nail. it aint pretty but it does work.

good guns for a narrow purpose.

I went shooting clay with one. The 12 gauge was blasting them, but I couldn't hit a damn thing with the 410. Went through shell after shell, lost my patience when the box went empty.

eDIT: I figure it'll have proper application once you're good with it, and you're shooting at the right stuff.

Fun rounds to shoot, if you want it buy it.

For survival Battery weapon might have a need for one if its widely used in your area of operation by many others.
Other wise a 20 -12g will be more common and ammo readily available.
My wife and daughter have no problems shooting 20g.

Agreed and good point. Especially for hunting small game. You can also get slugs for it which I've found to be pretty accurate. Great little gun to add to arsenal for the right price.

My only .410 is a Stevens bolt-action singleshot (STFU, John Melvin!) that I got basically because it looks so much like a .22 rifle it makes a great 'partner' to my Stevens Mod.15 .22LR singleshot rifle. I even finished their stocks to match!
I was actually looking for another cheapo .22 rifle, saw this one in the rack at the Gun&Pawn, and was handling it..... "Bead front sight on a twnetytwo rifle... weird!", looked at the receiver.... "Mighty BIG loading port....!"
THEN it dawned on me it was a .410 shotty! I HAD to have it! ;)

Fun to shoot, probably be a dandy 'squirrel gun', but I use a .22 rifle for that, or my 16ga. Remmy.

Haven't bought ammo for it. My BIL gave me a box, and a friend at work found some and gave it to me. Was enough to have some fun with it.

Now, I think a Saiga .410 semiauto would be a right NASTY little HD shotgun, for 'close up & personal' argument with a goblin..... Loaded with buckshot or slugs, it would be devastating.

Seawolf, a Saiga .410 would be cool and nasty!! Do they even make them?

I have an old side by side that I dearly love. Great to carry squirrel or rabbit hunting. I like the light weight and low recoil. Can be used for other things but I like larger shotguns for most others.

well if you put that 410 round in the Judge or Governor for up close home defense, with out a doubt it is useful, also if you pick up a 410 shotgun for cheap, things get bad, saw it off and keep it handy for the wife if someone comes in unannouced, she doesnt have to be a dead aim and the sound will get the attention of anyone not aware of the situation.. i know most bad guys would turn and run when they have a shotgun go off in their direction. and if they get dusted with some 410 pellets that will really make them count their blessings as they run away with their tails between their legs..

with the new Judge and Govenor handguns available now there are very good home defense round that throw three 9mm size projectiles plus BBs.. even if you dont get a center mass hit with that you still create a few different wounde canals.. thats what it is all about.. make the hemmorage..

Thanks I've got a 12ga 870 3"express magnum 18"and 28" I find the 12 overkill for small stuff up close and I'm not a "recoil pig" get the most enjoyment plinking with my rimfires.. I'm gonna grab a box o' .410 tonight and go shoot it up at my buddies "camp" tomorrow see if it tickles my "bawlz"enough to part with some hard earned scratch.

dont know if its true or not but i had heard somewhere that soviet spetnaz used them or something like them for vip protection. a full auto 410 loaded with buckshot.

    that would ruin your day.....

it is better than not having a gun at all.
During the Detroit Riot of 1967, while dad was at work. Mom was holding down the fort with a .410.

If that's whatcha got, that's what you bring.

That might not be enough gun to stop a herd of fat zombies but you only need to stop the leader in most cases.

They did a few years back - I thought about getting one. Had too many others on the priority list though.

Looking at the size of slug and velocity, a .410 is somewhat comparable to the .41 Magnum, though not as accurate. I sure would NOT argue with someone if I was staring down the barrel of a .410!

That very reason is why 12 gauge low recoil shot has become so popular.

Beyond the cost of 410 versus 12 gauge, I agree totally with Quigs. I may be an odd man out, but like anything, it is all about personal preference.
