I was just wondering what some of the rest of you who CCW do as far as storeing you gun when you have to go places where it cant like say into a Fed building or courthouse or some such. Do you have auto safes/lock boxes or something or just slip it under the seat or what? I got the class required here out of the way yesterday and if the stuff is open today so can do the paperwork should have my permit today or at least by Tuesday. Something I have considered is bolting an ammo can in the truck behind the seat of the truck with a padlock hasp on it and some foam as a place to store it where it cant leave unless the whole truck dose if I have to leave it in the truck to go in someplace but wanted to see if any of the rest of you had better ideas.
If you have a locking glove compartment, that would work...or you can do what Melbo does....have so many loaded guns in the car that it is just easier to leave it unlocked so people don't think you have any guns in the car.
The 1919 on a tripod in the back of the pickup bed is a dead giveaway.........to leave well enough alone and pick an easier target. MM, I usually just lock mine in the glove compartment, or put it in a "hideyhole", even sometimes just under or between the seats.
Yeah I have an old truck and the glove box dosnt lock, I always keep the truck locked anyway but was considering if I should have a lock box for it. For now will most likely just stuff it under the seat or some such if cant take it in, or seeing how as my passenger floorboard is usualy several inches deep in empty pop bottles and fast food bags and so on could just stick it under there and no thief is likely to bother with the trash. lol
I'm not usually frisked on my way into the Bank, Courthouse, etc.... If I do leave it in my truck, It just goes under the console. I don't live in a rough Hood
Well I know a lot of the gov buildings even out here (or at least in the nearest town you can go to buy anything) have security guards with metal detectors and check you comeing in and the school in the town next to us has metal detectors even though its a tiny town with no real problems. I figure in general with the way our laws are I will just carry it if Im carrying it and leave it at home if not but dont want to have to leave it with the security guards if have to go to a gov building.
It's a good thought, and I have seen some that would work nicely for this. Just be sure that you don't forget and take it out, it would suck if it was in there when you needed it the most.

Well, I guess we are kind of in between then. We have to take an 8 hour class to get our permit that includes range time and 'qualifying' which is a total joke. To qualify you shoot at a B27 IIRC target, the life size siloet at 21 feet, you get 20 shots and if 15 of them hit anyplace in the black you qualify. Needles to say the qualifycation is NOT a problem, and there is no written test you just have to spend 8 hours talking about pertenant laws and gun saftey and so on and doing the range practice (50 shots) and qualifying (20 more shots), then you take your certificate of completion to the sherif along with the app fee (up to sherif anything up to $100), get finger printed and run through a background check by the state and by the FBI then basicly if you can legaly own a handgun and are over 23 years old they give you a paper when the results come back and you go to the lisence bureu and get an ID or drivers lisence with an endorsement on it for concealed carry. When it comes time to renew it you dont have to reup the class you just go to the sherif again and do that part and the lisence renewal every 3 years IIRC.
Yes, Texas is a concealed carry state. Monkeyman, our CHL class is a lot like that. 8 hours first time, then for renewal it is a four hour class. Nothing is done through local law enforcement though, all of the background checks are done at the state and federal level, and the state issues the permits and does all of the leg work.
If your wanting to take a class like that I think the NRA offers some as well as any of the shooting schools kind of like gun site accadamy. So you submit your permits to highway patrole or what? Here its just that the county sherif takes the app and runs it through the states computers to check you out and sends the info to the FBI for them to check you then call you to come pick up your permit when they get aproval from the FBI, we are a shall issue state though so as long as you have the class, are over 23 and meet the same things you have to to buy/own a gun then they have to issue it, they do have 30-45 days to get it through though. Out here it just depends on how long the feds take to get back to them and as soon as the report comes back from them you are good to go.

Cool. I know we should have had ours about 8 years before we finaly got it. It was on the ballot and had overwhelming support up to about 2 or 3 weeks before the vote then the antis came out with a slanderous smear campaign claiming that if it passed it would make it totaly legal for felons to carry full auto uzis into schools and so on, even though just as it is now it was clearly stated in the law that no all normal gun laws would still pertain like no felons and more restrictive, no full autos and so on, but also that they could not be carried on school grounds, in polling places, gov buildings, bars casinos, and a few other such places. They were sued over it and had to make full retreactions but not untill after the vote and there were enouph folks whos only knowledge of the issues was the sound bites they herd that they convinced them it was true and it barely failed. Finaly a couple of years ago the state senate passed it, gov vetoed it and they over rode the veto and we got it. I know it never ceases to ammaze me how follks can be so dim as to believe that takeing guns away from law abideing citizens makes them safer and giveing guns to law abideing folks with at least minimal training is dangerous. I mean all you have to do to find out how well gun controle holds up is ask and anwser 2 questions and compare the anwsers, what are the 3 areas of the nation with the highest levels of gun crime, and what are the 3 areas that have the most gun controle. The anwser to both questions would be DC, NY, and LA, how is it so hard for anyone to see the pattern here? Ok, rant off.
Exactly. We didn't get it until grandma Ann Richards got voted out of Austin. George W.'s first act as Gov. was to sign the concealed carry into law. He came through with his campaign promise on that one.
Fingerprinted too? I don't like that one. The inital one I got, I filled out an app.,waited a couple weeks, picked it up at the sherrif's office. That was it. I will look into some kind of training, though.
