I recently posed a question to the Moderators and received no reply.
    .
I believe I have the answer to that question.
The Edit Post Feature disappears with time elapsed
    .
Recently I found that the Edit Post Feature seemed to disappear from some of my posts and not others. I wondered who and how the edit feature was controlled.
    .
Nothing nefarious about it. It seems that with some of the upgrades to SM that have been going on this particular change occured.
    .
Posts are automatically locked where no edit is possible under normal circumstances by the poster after 24 to 36 hours. I am not sure exactly the time, but it falls in that range. If you post something, and then want to edit it, you better do so in less than 24 hours, or you may not be able to do so.

Maybe it is a good thing. It keeps us all more honest and aware. With our mouths once we say something it stands. You can't take the words back. You may apologize for them, but they still were uttered.

I think you are right about the time limits, and I'll check into it. At one time there wasn't any limit and it may have defaulted back during an upgrade. Don't hold your breath for a change back to no limits; as you say, it keeps a poster honest.

In the meantime, if something egregious shows up that wants fixed, PM a mod or admin.

Edit to add: Current edit time limit is 24 hours, this is global and affects all users; it ain't just you.

    Tac,

I think 24 hours is too long for you. I will suggest 2 minutes for you only. The rest of us might need a little more time, like 24 hours.

I have seen this at other forums too. One limits us to a mere FIVE minutes!

    LOL :D

Yea if after 24hrs you need to edit, then maybe the post should be made in the first place... j/k

i bet one could pm a moderator if they really wanted something changed.include thread and what you want cut and pasted. the reasons for thread edit is simply thread continuity

5 is all you get here, too, initially. Meaning you don't get to start a post and go eat lunch. Once you start, you have to finish and post up within 5 minutes of the last key stroke, otherwise you lose it. (Don't ask ---:D)

After posting, you get a day to reconsider the wisdom ---

Other forums differ. I'm on one that gives you an hour after posting for the edits that we here have a day to use. The mods on that forum work with you if there is an error that needs correcting. (Not typos or grammar.)

NOPE - I'm talking EDITING an already accepted post. Five minutes, then it cannot be edited.......
Entirely different from the time limit for MAKING a post.

I am well aware of this feature as of now. Would have been nice to know some time ago. Y'all wonder why I sometimes post something with out fully investigating it. Well more than once when putting together a post I have been sidetracked to check something out or otherwise gather additional info....AND BLAM OUT OF THE BLUE LOSE THE WHOLE DAMN THING!!! At least now I know what happened. Sometimes it takes more than 5 minutes to track something down.

I've never run into this 5 minutes to post problem and I often compose some of my more complex posts like gear reviews for nearly an hour... dunno

I haven't either, melbo...and I've walked off and left stuff while answering the phone, etc....The "edit" feature is something totally different...but I've never had the 5 minute problem? What does it do ghrit? Go away? Post itself? [dunno]

Hm. That's unique. I don't think that can be isolated to a single user. Test it again in this thread and let me know. (Dredging that stuff out of the software really challenges me.)

One thing I've hit that drives me wiggy is when I've gone to preview, decided I like it, and go back to the forum without hitting submit. That's a dead end, have to start over, and by then the thought is wiped out.

Ah ---. Ooops. That five minutes is to edit the thread title after posting, not for the whole thread pre-posting. Toad ja that stuff is obscure.

I shoulda stayed in bed this morning.

Wolfie, give it another try and let me or melbo know what happens.

test of the 5 minute delete of post body

Okay, just for giggles I will start this test at the time posted last as per my computer clock and leave it on the screen until either it dissappears or I decide to close things down and go to bed. 9:47pm est.
    .
one hour later no dump of post. during that time I made no key strokes.

G, the "five minute" problem I spoke of is a different site than this........

Yet another site has an annoying 'feature' whereby if you make a post and send it, if within five minutes you make a second post (like putting a series of pics detailing some procedure) then the second post gets rolled into the first! As I make a separate set of 'instructions' for each set, and the pics are appended to the end on the entire post, this can totally screw up a nice long detailed posting.....
Seems each forum site can have quite different rules in play!

Very true. The options available for setting are different in different forum software packages. It's the software that controls the looks and "feel" of what shows up on screen, and may not offer an option at all for some things. Gotta say that melbo picked the best I've seen, tho' in some ways, it's more complex.

Saying that, other forums that use vBulletin are apt to use different settings because their admin likes it that way.
