Howdy y'all. Been rethinking and looking at options for carrying shotgun ammo in the field. So, I figured I would crowdsource some ideas, and see how y'all preferred to pull it off.
Hey @AxesAreBetter ! I have a 887 Remington (18 inch barrel) in a scabbard that can be carried a number of ways (over the shoulder, behind you with strap across your chest, strapped to something, etc.). I prefer a scabbard so the firearm is directly accessible, one doesn't need to unzip anything, yet all of the firearm is protect except the butt of the stock which sticks out. I don't have a tactical sling yet which perhaps your post here will give me some ideas. I can post a photo of the scabbard if you wish, it's nylon and well padded. Works well.
If I am hunting/sporting clays, i use a game vest. Have a pouch made to carry a box of shells, then a dump bag for the hulls and a sleeve on the gun for a few shells. Doesn't work out real well and is even more of a problem with reloads that I haven't really always have crimped well. I am very open to any suggestions in this area, it one of my biggest weakness in leaving the house, etc. Shells are bulky, heavy, don't stack neatly, not really sealed well, bulky empties that crush easily, etc.
a leather nail pouch like this. Mine has a top that stays closed (metal strap in top seam) but is easy to reach in to grab re-load. I carry this in bear country for an additional 10 rounds for reloads. I figure If I can't kill the beast after 15 rounds, I deserve to be lunch.....
I've tried a bandolier, but it barely reaches the bottom of my ribs, and was not even the slightest bit comfortable to carry.
Yeah. I think if I had an 80 or hundred round bandolier, it would probably work, but those things cost some dang money these days...

There's some great pouches illustrated in those links and there's probably a few that will serve Mr. Axes purposes well. For storage here at home with a couple of exceptions all my ammo is in G.I. ammo cans.
