    such an idiot...

Have y'all heard about this? And yes, I verified it first...

    http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp

Here's a new twist scammers are using to commit identity theft: the jury duty scam. Here's how it works:

The scammer calls claiming to work for the local court and claims you've failed to report for jury duty. He tells you that a warrant has been issued for your arrest.

The victim will often rightly claim they never received the jury duty notification. The scammer then asks the victim for confidential information for "verification" purposes.

Specifically, the scammer asks for the victim's Social Security number, birth date, and sometimes even for credit card numbers and other private information — exactly what the scammer needs to commit identity theft.

So far, this jury duty scam has been reported in Michigan, Ohio, Texas, Arizona, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, Oregon and Washington state.

It's easy to see why this works. The victim is clearly caught off guard, and is understandably upset at the prospect of a warrant being issued for his or her arrest. So, the victim is much less likely to be vigilant about protecting their confidential information.

In reality, court workers will never call you to ask for social security numbers and other private information. In fact, most courts follow up via snail mail and rarely, if ever, call prospective jurors.

Action: Never give out your Social Security number, credit card numbers or other personal confidential information when you receive a telephone call.

This jury duty scam is the latest in a series of identity theft scams where scammers use the phone to try to get people to reveal their Social Security number, credit card numbers or other personal confidential information.

It doesn't matter *why* they are calling — all the reasons are just different variants of the same scam.

Protecting yourself is simple: Never give this info out when you receive a phone call.

I can't believe people fall for that stuff. It doesn't matter what they're saying - it's what they want and as soon as it's personal info just hang up.

Ya know, they are only doing this BECAUSE the sheeple fall for it. I've had to "verify" my identity on the phone before, but knowing better I asked them to give me the information they had and I would verify. They refused so I said I'll give you my street number, if it matches, you give me my street name and I will verify it is correct. They hung up :D I don't even remember why they called me.

Another scam going on right now is some survey targeted at veterans in regards to pharmaceuticals and the VA.

If you are a veteran and get your care through the VA - do not I repeat do not give out any information (especially credit card information). This is a scam and was not authorized by Veteran Affairs.

I make up SSNs and DOBs for all but the .gov.
Sometimes I make up names too. Ex. Any magazine subscription that does happen to come to my house comes to "***services"

Alot of folks don't realize the DOB importance. Think about it, there may be 200 J. Smiths in a medium size town. But how many were born on 02/02/74? 1 prolly.

We get so used to giving out info when asked. Time to make an effort to think about it before you give Home Phone number, SSN, Real Addy, DOB, etc... It's not a lie if you don't intend to deceive!

You wouldn't believe how many people have printed on their checks their names, addresses, phone, DOB, and sometimes, even their SSN.

Yup, WHen I'm asked for my phone number when paying by check, I speak a "typo" for the number. My check is good and I intend no fraud, but Lowes just doesn't need that info to add to it's Consumer Database.

I'm so stubborn that when the cashier says "may I have your zip code" I simply say "No" End of discussion. You wouldn't believe the looks I get - they don't quite know what to do. I'm easily amused [LMAO]

Why do people feel they have to answer every questions they are asked?

I told my dad about this TLynn..and he said he had been called twice on this already...and hung up on them...

Course he taught me most of what I know..I remember back in the 70's or early 80's ..we were at a Home Depot..and they asked for his SS# when he wrote a check..and he said .."Not only NO..Hell NO..and you have no right to ask for it"....the clerk told him she couldn't take his check...and we walked out the store with nothing...

I did the same thing at a Walgren's Pharmacy in the 80's except I told it to the store manager before I left.

Same thing at a grocery store in the late 80s. Turns out that it is legal to ask (well, it was then) but there is no need to give your SSN to them. If they have a policy in place that requires an SSN to provide a certain service, (in this case check cashing) then if you want the service, you gotta comply. I didn't and won't. Never went back in that grocery, there were plenty more around. It is closed, now --

Back when carbon paper was used in credit card slips, I would insist they give me the carbon as well as my charge slip. You could read all the info from the carbon slip. All my life I've gotten weird looks because people thought I was nuts but all my concerns have been proven correct. There is value in mistrust of the motives of others.

I did that too! I never let them keep my carbon with my credit card info on it.....

Saw people steal them back then..! Not like today , of course..nothing like it..

    No...we worked....

But I had forgotten about asking for that piece of carbon paper.....

Today's big thing is they ask for your phone number when you're buying stuff.

I look at them and tell them it's none of their damn business...especially since 99.9% of the time I'm paying with cash.
