I have fire steel but what I am looking for is some sort of weatherproof lighter that burns, really hot, doesn't leak and I can carry on my keychain or in my pocket all the time. I want the ability to make a fire quickly. I don't care if it is butane or lighter fluid or whatever... It must be durable, very durable because I am not gentle with my tools. There is so much junk out there and they are costly so thought I would start here.

Can anyone recommend anything that reasonably works and is reliable?

What about a permanent match or a rope lighter.

Buckets of Bic lighters will do you well ;)

i have a windproof butane light my sister gave me as a gift one Christmas, i really liked. it had both an electric heating element, and butane, so it would not blow out, no matter what. it always worked, and worked well. it was refillable, and never leaked. only problem i ever had with it, was the battery finally wore out, and absolutely no one has succeeded in getting it open to replace the battery. it still works fine as a standard butane lighter, but i have scarred it up trying to get it opened. it is around here someplace still, i think. i will see if i can find any marking on it. it is similar to the floating lighters in tikka's post.

Thanks guys. I cannot understand why technology hasn't produced a winner yet...

Matchsafe? My go to for fire that doesn't take a kit to run. Plus the ladies still occasionally think it's sexy when you light a smoke with a stick match. Haha.

Most of the ladies I know give a rip how you light a smoke, they are more concerned with the man behind the item being lit. ;)

I've been looking because I've seen a couple of "cigar torches" that fit on a keychain. I've seen them in person but can't find any that don't take a week to get here from China (or longer) and they seem to be huge.

The cigar torch has the high intensity flame from high pressure butane. Sticks straight out when sideways (but I wouldn't suggest upside down) and the ones I've seen use a piezzo electric igniter.

    Still looking for you though.

I have been watching this thread because I didn't think there was a water proof lighter. I know you can send a Bic through the washer and it will eventually dry out and work again but I have never seen anything advertised as waterproof.

Oh yes, you can get them waterproof. Those who ride the Rapids need them.

I've used one of those cigar lighter style. Carried one for about a year, but I keep coming back to matches. Really like being able to shove a lit stick in a pile and it catch fire without me burning my hands off. Ha.

Hmmm...look on Amazon and saw very little of interest. I will keep nosing around as got to be something reliable out there. I think a Waterproof Torch Lighter of some sort is what I am after...

I really don't think there are many keychain size and of those, they will NOT be inexpensive.

Okay, just found this. 11 years out of production but if you can find one...

Sorry, but never released for sale in the US, and is just an odd Bic lighter with a piezo igniter. Interesting, unique, but not what he is looking for.

The pictures look like it's a jet vs just a bic "candle" flame. I know it wasn't released in the US. It was also discontinued 11 years ago so the chance of finding one is exceedingly rare. Not released in the US, however, doesn't mean he couldn't get one from an overseas seller.

    **note**
This knife had lighter issues and would most likely not be a good survival tool. It was an interesting "2 birds with one stone" idea, however, and may spark other ideas/searches...which is why I mentioned it.

I believe there is also a knife with a USB drive as part of the knife.
But, he wants durable, waterproof, and works anywhere type.

    Tighten your seat belts:
"For the modern-day adventurers who demand performance, S.T. Dupont has created the DEFI EXTREME lighter. Capable of withstanding winds up to 37mph, the Défi Extrême guarantees maximum efficiency in all situations. Its extraordinarily powerful blue flame torch will light in any weather conditions provided by nature on a daily basis. A shock-proof bumper made from a high-resistant semi-rigid material protects the lighter and guarantees an excellent grip. The intuitive design makes it particularly easy to hold and use. "

    Discounted to $170. :eek::eek:

Yep, they exist, but they ain't cheap. Mine was a Christmas gift. I will ask where she got it. I've had no issues with it. (Until the battery failed)
