February 6, 2008 -- RUNNING as a conserva tive, John McCain rolled up huge victories last night in New York, New Jersey and beyond. But if history is any guide, the McCain we've seen of late on the campaign trail is the most conservative McCain we'll ever see.
He has taken a commanding lead in the GOP primary by packaging himself as the "true conservative" committed to limited government, to slashed federal spending and to an avowedly conservative Supreme Court.
He claims the mantle of Ronald Reagan. He even claims the mantle of Barry Goldwater, conservatism's crack version of Reagan. But as McCain clinches the GOP nomination, he will begin his usual leftward lurch.
He will return to his lifelong positions as soft on illegal immigration, skeptical of tax cuts and favoring strong federal control over things like campaign financing.
McCain's appeal to independents and even the left is what makes him such a powerhouse in the general election.
It is also precisely what has so many in the Republican base so wildly fearful of handing him the keys to the kingdom.
If the Republican Party expands "because we have a candidate who's going out trying to attract liberals by being like them, then the party's going to be around but you won't recognize it," thundered radio king Rush Limbaugh.
The Republican Party will "be over as it exists now," he warns.
To understand just how McCain has managed to limp to the front of the GOP field, look no further than the outcome of yesterday's West Virginia Republican Convention.
At the outset, victory was in the air for Mitt Romney, the flip-flopping former Massachusetts governor.
He is universally loathed by all the other GOP candidates, who banded together to give all their votes to Mike Huckabee - simply to deny Romney a win.
The depressing GOP field that has paved a path to victory for McCain also gave surprising wins last night to Huckabee in Georgia, Alabama and Tennessee, as well as in his home state of Arkansas.
Still, McCain has so radicalized key conservatives that some have vowed to turn themselves into suicide voters next November by pulling the lever for Hillary Rodham Clinton over him. [beer]
This last-minute blitz against McCain by Limbaugh and others, however, comes far too late.
But if those conservatives sit out the general election, they will help Democrats make history by electing either the first black president or the first female president next November.

McCain never dined with the Rothschilds, and Hillary is their chosen.

We will just have to wait and see.

From MSNBC this morning. Doesn't look promising for Ron, but something might yet happen if the message gets out somehow. My precinct captain is busting ass around here, flyers all over the place, but the polls (and primary here in VA) don't reflect it.

*** McCain’s win and Huck’s surprise: If the name of the game is accumulating delegates, then McCain was definitely the winner on the GOP side last night. NBC’s delegate total for last night (as of 3:15 am ET) was McCain 423, Romney 130, Huckabee 102, and Paul 5. The big surprise of the night was Huckabee’s sweep of the South. We knew that he would end up hurting Romney in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and West Virginia, but we didn’t anticipate him winning those states. And as a result, McCain ended up having a good night -- but not a great one. The attention now turns to Romney, who won Massachusetts, Utah, and the caucuses in the Mountain West, but little else. California was Romney’s shot at a symbolic win to keep his White House hopes alive. But he fell short there, and looking at the calendar, it’s hard to see where Romney could pull off a significant win to wrest the front-runner title away from McCain. Romney has to make the decision to stick in this race to March 4 (and spend in very expensive states, i.e. Texas and Ohio). This isn't about testing whether he can stop McCain in Virginia; the decision he's making today is about staying in for another four weeks.

McCain has never been right(wing). The only thing that I know that Mr. McCain has ever done right-wing in his political life was not voting for the assault weapons ban.

I'm not sure how that differs at all from the current administration.

Exactly the point of trying to get a Paul (or equal) in the oval office. He would have no chance of getting all of his agenda thru the congress, no matter which party is in control, but at least his principles would get a better bully pulpit.

How the sam hill can you lend credence to anyone that cannot tell the difference between "loan" and "lone" assassin? (That cannot have been an honest mistake for humor, it is just plain ignorant, dense.) There may be some truth behind the words in that article, but I can't get past the lack of proof reading ability of the editor. (Not to mention the convenient stitching together of real events into a grand conspiracy.)

Good read? Hardly factual as near as I can tell, but entertaining in a dark, highly negative sense.

Tin foil hat material, as is most political playing these days. [boozingbuddies]

I don't know, Ghrit. If you take the time to trace the campaign funds, political ties, documented meetings and relationships with convicted criminals, it spells an ugly paragraph with McCain's name coming up every five words. The guy is a criminal, he must be if he's a frontrunner. Do you want to see a "cRaZy CoNsPiRaCy TiN FoIl HaT" story? Try doing that with Ron Paul. Try explaining why the REAL good guys only get 4% of the "vote", while "decent" and "honest" politicians like McCain or pick a Bush -have an easy walk to the White House.

Bah. I don't mean to argue. This is a simple matter to understand. Money talks, BS walks. The real conspiracies happen while most Americans are frightened into submission and completely sold on the two party system. It's not like a few hundred "CoNsPiRaCy LoOnIeS" are to blame for Slavery, Inc. It's not as if these people are making this stuff up because they are bored. It's a disinformation and propaganda campaign where corporate media controls information, where CIA MKUltra technicolor subliminal reality warps the average listless, indifferent, mundane's useless mind. REALITY is what the television tells you it is.

Nevermind trying to think for yourself. THAT would actually make you a nonconformist. They should dole out medication for that. Oh, wait...they do.

WATCH OUT! THE CRAAAZY GUY JUST CALLED MCCAIN A CROOK! WHAT ARE THE ODDS THAT A POLITICIAN COULD EVER BE GUILTY?

    Whatever. :)

"Money talks, BS walks." Cannot, in essence, dispute that. However, now and then, money does not do the whole job, witness the Romney dumping of scratch into the short term. If Ron had that much pocket, methinks the outcome would be a whole lot different. See also the BS that money can spread in the Obuma and Clunton camps. There are at least two exceptions to the rule, the BS is marching, not walking. Drat reality, anyhow.

    Re: McCain.....AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH HHHHH

    Drats reality indeed, my friend.

Hell, I gave up on politics long ago. About the time Howard Phillips left the Constitution Party. Sure, I kept clinging on from time to time, ya know...hoping...waiting. Then Peroutka and his fanatic christian cult took over, and it all became crystal clear to me. Political parties are infiltrated by goons of chaos, it doesn't matter who else runs on the ticket. If the media gave even half the amount of air time and campaign coverage as they do Hillary or any republican bonesman, it would be a different ballgame.

    We live in interesting times.

We don't have to worry about what kind of president McCain might be. He may get the Republican nomination but he will never be president.

McCain only picks up so-called independents and Democrats when he running against fellow Republicans. Once he is running 1:1 with a Democrat then he will fade badly. The conservative base will be lukewarm at best and certainly won't "go the extra mile" for his campaign. At worst we may abandon him. I predict he would get less than 25% of the vote.

No Democrat will vote for McCain instead of Clinton or Obama. That is McCain's pipe dream. Total fantasy.

By some miracle we get a true conservative on the Republican ticket, or hillary will be the next president. She will tear McCain limb from limb of they face off. He may think they are such good buddies because he has colluded with Dems so aften, but Hillary will be out to win the "Little Rock" way. Right, Vince?
