I heard they had a meeting with a county and fed about the open range up north...It has been that way for EONS...but for some reason, ( I think it's all about money!) the open range thing is disappearing! I heard that the ranchers have "abused" the privelege, and were supoosed to be paying a yearly permit fee.....Guess they thought it would go on forever!
Now that can be a real serious problem for the ranchers, not to mention those that buy meat! The ranchers will no longer be able to let the cattle roam and eat freely with barely any assist from the rancher for feed. IF this is true, then the ranchers will have to contain the cattle and feed them daily. That's got to be outrageoulsy expensive for them. Last time I checked up there, a bale of alfalfa was $9 to $10 each! Figure there has to be from 300 to 500 head of cattle from 2 separate ranchers at any given time, that's gonna be passsed on to the buyers! IF they don't just quit, or really cut back on the amount of cattle they have on hand.
Last year I could get yearling calves for $35 a piece, and they were really nice...That will come to a screeching halt soon!
