Can't afford a BOL? How about a camper or RV? Which one would you choose? And why?

Trailer type for me. First alternate is slide in unit; they can be unloaded and sited readily on stands, and release the motive power for other uses.

This is something we've been going back and forth on for a long time. When I had my truck it wasn't a concern, we were looking at trailers. Now we're down to one truck and that changes everything. Wouldn't matter if World War Z zombies were bearing down on us, the Mr. will be hooking to the bass boat. I voted for a truck bed camper, got shot down hard. So right now I'm leaning towards an RV because I can hook the landscape trailer to it. Not a big diesel pusher tho. Would LOVE one of those old Toyota minis but they're hard to come by around here. Good mileage on them.

I would have gone with three choices; RV, Trailer, Camper and I would have chosen Trailer.
You can unhitch and go without hauling your house around.

I just have no idea what would be the best. Economically, practically and the over all best for the family and bug out if ever needed. Like @ditch witch this has been debated over and over. We cannot afford a second place so land that rv/camper is a cheaper option.

RV's are gas hogs and would sit unless you needed it. But- the family could ride in it when using. No extra vehicle needed. Can be parked/ placed on land. Inside can be demoed to build bunks and more storage. Can pull a trailer behind it.

Camper- need a truck or vehicle to pull it. Depending on size of said camper you made need a big gas hogging truck. People are not supposed to ride in camper when it is being pulled. You would need vehicle to accommodate family. Can be parked/ placed on land. Vehicle used to pull camper/trailer would give you more room for stuff i.e truck bed.

Have a BOL, but if I had to go mobile I'd take the camper. Nothing exotic, diesel powered 3500 dually 4X4, crewcab with long bed. Stick a fold up Port-A-Boat on the side of the camper and a front bumper mount for one or two small off road bikes.

The answer is really, it depends. Family size or how many people you intend to travel with. Terrain you'll be traveling over and distance needed to travel.

For me and my family it would be a bumper pull camper. Should the need arise quick to detach. Can haul in the bed of the truck and in the camper. Camper batteries (if equipped) can be kept charged while traveling.

But for right now it's nothing, cause I have a BOL nearby that we'd go to. Stocked and ready for us.

To me this is easy. It's a bumper hitch trailer.
Why? With a shell on the truck bed, you can load a lot of cans of fuel, water and other gear in the back. If the truck crapped out for whatever reason it would be easiest and quickest to find another truck or repair a common truck. Or even travel to the BOL in a convoy with a spare truck or two. Economically a used truck and trailer are generally more affordable than an RV and comparable to a slide in camper. They can be hard to back up but utimately are lower center of gravity and can be more stable running down the road. There are rough terrain trailers with high approach and departure angles available. You have the fastest and most reconfigurability to handle changing situations and you can abandon the trailer worst case and still haul a good amount in a covered truck bed and even sleep there. Unless my BOL was on the water, I don't know why I'd want the burden of also hauling a boat on a trailer. Now if the question was best vacation unit, this might change the answer.

I live in my RV, and have an external trailer. We have a van which tows the trailer, and a 4 door car which is towed by our RV. a majority of our preps live at our BOL, but we have enough in our home to last at least a solid month. I wrote an article RVs for a bug out vehicle, from the standpoint of having lived in one. Perhaps not extremely in depth but it does touch on the high points:

That boat was the only thing he got out of the divorce from his first wife, and he fought tooth and nail to get it. Hell, high water, F5 tornadoes, raging wildfires, crack fueled zombies, none of them have a thing on that witch. So where he goes, the Skeeter goes. He ain't leaving it behind and I'm not even going to try to argue with him. And it hooked to his truck equals over 40 ft... hate to add a tagalong trailer to that. At least a mini RV would give me the option to hook the little trailer on and load up a bunch of gear.

Voted camper but have a small R/V. We can haul the camper behind if necessary for extra bed space. Also have a 14 flat bottom boat on a trailer and we can put the two canoes on it. Like the little R/V as it is self contained. When we add solar panels it will be just a super place to play. Taking it to the mts next weekend for a few days of relaxing.

They are now making trailer/campers that are light enough to pull behind a small SUV. We had monkey post a thread a few months back that showed a little camper, it got me thinking that I could actually pull a little camper with my everyday vehicle. A little camper would not fit the family but it got me considering a camper vs. an RV.
