The poison Ricin reportedly sent to the capitol.

An envelope that tested positive for the deadly poison ricin was intercepted Tuesday afternoon at the U.S. Capitol's off-site mail facility in Washington, congressional and law enforcement sources tell CNN.
After the envelope tested positive in a first routine test, it was retested two more times, each time coming up positive, the law enforcement source said. The package was then sent to a Maryland lab for further testing.
The envelope was addressed to a U.S. senator, though the sources would not say which one.

I am reminded of the days after 9/11. First the attacks, then the anthrax.

I'm hearing it was to Senator Wicker, R-MS.

I guess we need a background check before a person can buy a castor bean plant. We should also register any current and future owners of castor plants.

I'm sorry, but what good would it do to send an envelope full of a toxin that needs to be ingested in order to harm someone? I may be totally wrong here, but I thought ricin needs to be consumed in order to be deadly, unlike say anthrax that could be inhaled easily or infect the skin and spread from person to person. Anybody know about this?

Not a definitive reference, but...Ricin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Can be inhaled, ingested or injected. Ingestion seems to be less effective.

EDIT: The most notorious use of ricin I am aware of was the assassination of a Bulgarian dissident by injection with a ricin impregnated pellet with an penetrator on an umbrella (perpetrated by Bulgarian spies in London) Georgi Markov - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So worst case scenario, the intended victim would open the letter, breath it in or get it on their hands before eating? It sounds like this was more of a scare tactic than a precise attack. Like stated by Allyn earlier, this reminds me of the anthrax letters that had everybody avoiding their mailbox.

If it was white and Zero opened it he probably would have reverted to his old days and snorted it.

Ok, mentioned this in the shout-box but I haven't heard ANYONE else mention it as a motive yet (and the lamestream media is actually asking if it's tied in any way to the Boston Bombing because it happened the next day!). Wicker was the one Mississippi Senator that voted FOR sending the gun bill to the floor for debate & vote. It's entirely possible that it was sent to him by one of his pissed off constituents in "retaliation" for being "anti-gun", or at least in their eyes. I'm not defending it but it was the very first thing I thought of and I haven't heard it anywhere.

That make sense to anyone else?

It makes sense to me, as I read it on my local ABC website it was from a person who regularly sent mail to the senator. My very first thought when I read it was "Which senator and how did he vote for the gun bill?" I was hoping in vain it was a staunch 2A supporter and this could be pinned on some crazy anti-gun advocate, then I remembered that they are too scared to use weapons by definition.

This is IMHO an unstable person in the first place and didn't think the plan through anyway. Just as a "suspicious substance" was found today in a letter to the president, do these people actually think that politicians open their own mail? I'm not even faulting them for not, they must get hundreds to thousands a day, they literally couldn't read them all. So the unstable people who do this don't realize that all letters are checked in an offsite area and didn't realize the letter would be opened by some secretary whom the senator may not even know by name. I'm saying he is either incredibly dumb, true straight-jacket crazy, or someone who fully expects to get caught and just wanted to make a scene. Possibly more than one of the above.
