Being out of work and broke, I've been dipping into the food reserves quite heavily. Tonight I came across two large cans of Campbells New England Clam Chowder with a "use by" date of Aug '06 - almost exactly 1 year too old.

So here we go, I'm puttin' my gastrointestinal tract on the line in the name of shelf life research. It smelled ok, but it looked a little...... hmmm.... more congealed than usual. Tasted fine. I microwaved it and ate it about 10 minutes ago and so far so good.

We'll see how this turns out in the next few hours I'm sure.

11:40 pm - No adverse affects noticed.

11:57 (chowder + 25 minutes)..... I seem to be burping a lot, but I feel fine otherwise.

Funny thing..... I wouldn't let my dog lick the bowl when I was done... just in case. I'm more careful with his food than I am mine.

    Chowder + 4 hrs.

No problems. I'm going to bed now but I'm thinkin' it's a success. Unless I wake up sick in the morning of course, but I feel fine now.

this is a subject that has come up for me lately. I have called several companies to get the expiry dates from the codes cambells is one of the only ones that i have seen that actually puts the date on the cans, now legally they will not tell you that anything past the code date is edible and i think if stored properly you could extend the life of it, but here comes the dilemma mentally i know the ex date has past do i still eat it. same as wild edibles you have to guage the risk/benefit ratio.

keep us informed of your experiment.

    always be prepared.

More than 13 hours now and I feel fine. So it's good for at least a solid year after the expiration date.

I just finished a can of Campbell's "chunky" New England clam chowder that expired in 2010. It is now 2015... Still waiting on the effects. Will post another thread but thought I'd reply here first
