I was wondering, what all preperations have the folks here made for any kind of mid to long term SHTF situation that interupted infrastructure and services such as utilities and supply networks? I know for any short term situation a generator and a good supply of batteries and gas along with laid in supplies of food and such should see you through. Im thinking in terms of anything that was ongoing for several months or even years.
There would be the obvious things to have like hand tools to take the place of power tools, a hand pump for a well or a cistern large enouph to supply houshold needs with local rainfall, some heirloom seeds and a garden when in season, some kind of critters to supply meat (rabbits in the urban/suburban areas at least goats , chickens or something at least in rural areas), jars and canner to preserve foods once refrigeration is out, but what are some of the other things you could do to be prepaired for after the gas for the generators and batteries for the toys and tools run out?
Im also figureing means to defend ones self, family and goods is also a given. Im mostly wondering about others ideas on how to deal with the loss of all the modern technoligy we have come to rely on, going 1900 high tec.

This is a good question and one i have been contemplating. Here are some things I have been doing for mid to longterm planning:

    • 1. Canning food has been on my mind. This weekend I picked up a water bath canner and i am ordering a pressure canner. I intend to can tomatoes and a couple other items in the next few weeks to see how it goes. I am up to about 150 mason jars and plan on getting close to 500 in my collection with extra tops.

      2. Seeds: Can't can without seeds.

      3. Big Home in Suburbia: Possibly putting on market in next 6 months and moving to country farmhouse on 10-20 acres. Wife is onboard if we can find an oldfashioned farm house.

      4. Food Stores: I have been adding to my normal stores. I intend to get up to a 12-18 month supply of non-perishables. I need to add vitamins to my stock.

I like the ram pump idea too if had a stream around. The water is one issue we need to look at as we curently haul water but if lights go out so dose running water if you get it from the lines.

I think long term sustainability will all come down to low-tech solutions. I'm a tech lover but I think that all of the convenience preps will just be for during the transition. I'm not going to count on my Solar rig to recharge my NiCd batteries for the GPS for too long. That's what my compass and maps of my AO are for.
