I was on the phone tonight outside the back door and guess who came up for a visit. I am not a very hospitable person when you don't call first and this uninvited guest found out the hard way, my demand to leave was answered up with a 20 guage round.

Good shot. The Mrs missed getting a rattler while weed whacking last week because she was not packing. Now she has a 22 pistol on her while doing yard work. Would hate to piss her off now while doing yard work!!!

Funny thing, I didn't aim, that was an instinctive shot!

My ex-wife was out cutting grasss with a weedeater one day when our doberman ran out in front of her and started showing her teeth. My ex tried to shoo her off but the dog stood her ground. About the time she shut off the weedeater a copperhead came out of the grass and nailed the dog on the side of the head.

My ex killed the snake and kept it in a bucket until I got home. Biggest copperhead I ever seen. The head was as big as a silver dollar.

The dogs head swelled up to where she looked like an elephant. She laid around and moaned for a few days and slowly got better.

My old Grandad told me that the dog would either be afraid of anything that looked like a snake or kill anything that looked like one.

She did the latter. When you were thru with the water hose you had better put it up. If it was left out that dog would chew it to pieces.
She killed several snakes after that. Even a couple of pretty good sized rattlers. She never got bit again. I guess she learned which end to stay away from!

I have been doing a lot of brush clearing on my new place. I bought, and carry, a Taurus Judge loaded with .410 shells when I'm working. So far I haven't had the chance to use it.

Nice. Last year I had a 5' FAT diamond Back come into my back yard near my back door. I was lucky he didn't hit the dog. Anyway, I shot him as well. He had 19 rattles. He was a beast.

That would be a beautiful snake if it wasn't for the shotgun damage. You should have just caught it and put it into the freezer then the skin could be taken whole.

That is a specimen of Copperhead, one of the four venomous species of snakes in North America. It is a pit-viper and injects venom through large fangs to immobilize and kill their prey with a poison that is both neuro-toxic and digestive; makes a nasty bite.

Sounds like you need to come visit for a few days to go poking around in the rock ledge, you could probably find enough to make a coat from. Even enough left over to knit a doile. That is the sixth snake I have killed, wantonly and accidentally. Not much into snake skins.

Kill em all, let the herpitologist sort them out. Sorry, I don't like snakes. Only good one is a dead one.

LOL...my wife would agree with you 100% but I always thought they were kinda cool animals long as they stay where they belong. Bug has a model 19 SMith loaded with CCI rat-shots and when she sees a snake, she shoots until the gun goes "click". SHe called me a while back when I was in the Islands and said she needed some more snake bullets, said she only had nine left...that's just 1.5 snakes in her book.

But, but, copperheads are not supposed to be in Kansas, right?

I have killed two! No copperheads in Kansas, my ass!

Copperheads are lousy around these parts of the woods. When I was in college, I used to go out to Pillsbury crossing and they were all over out there, so I got this grand idea of getting a frog gigging spear and going copperhead hunting. The stick was six foot long and when I found my first snake, I stuck him to the log. That was as far as my plan went. When that snake realized that he was hurting, he got pissed and started twisting, bending the spines of my spear. I eventually had to pull free and he fell down on the rock and went between my feet high tailing it for the water. That is when I decided that if I was going to be the great Copperhead hunter, it was going to be with a rifle and I promptly bought my first SP1.

LOL Yeah I was bucking hay a couple weks ago and was kind of amused when I noticed one of the bails had a tail. A copper head about 3' long had got caught by the bailer and about 6" of the nasty end was smashed in the bail and had killed it. as kind of tough to pull it out too.

LOL! At least the pointy end was in the hay. I was bucking hay one summer when I was a kid and grabbed a bale that tried to bite me!! Had a rattler baled up in it with the head and about 18" of the body sticking out the side.
