Urban Bug-Out Day

Didn't want to hijack mm's thread on bug out guns but I had a few thoughts on it.

This is an Urban setting. Major City or a Rural bug out that has to get through a bottleneck to keep moving. Think bridge or other checkpoint.

We were joking about monkeymans beard. I know when I had long hair and a beard that I was treated differently than I was when I was clean shaven and had short cropped hair.

There is a perceived perception that people have when meeting you based on your appearance.

So, a complete set of BDUs with any sort of Tactical looking Load Out will get you noticed. Yes, in some sits, you may be able to pass for some Covert security agency but then again, If you look like that Post SHTF and come walking into my front yard, I just may not appreciate security; .Gov or otherwise.

So, if avoidance of others on your way out of the city is unavoidable, how do you blend in and still carry what you feel you need?

I'd have some cached supplies outside of town but I tend to think long term in my planning. In mm's case, and if he lived in , say, Chicago, Would he shave his beard and cut his hair to get out safely? Would it be better to pretend to be a College student with a backpack full of books?

I think that camouflage is the art of blending in; whatever the surroundings. A lot of folks I've met with on different Survival Sites seem to always plan on bugging out fully loaded for Zombies. Rifle, Handgun w/ backup, 760 rounds of ammo, etc. I used to plan like that when I was 10 and played Dungeons and Dragon... That 'Bag of Holding' was endless as far as I was concerned.

    Reality is much different

I'd try and have Sniper-66 buzz by and pick me up :D

Blending in is crucial, it would be a lot easier if it was in cooler weather and wearing a coat coat could hide a lot of things.

Like this, strapped to your back.

Sorry Magnus, I think I might just keep my AMD.

If it was an on foot thing I would actualy be likely to keep the hair and beard. I generaly wear old second hand work cloths anyway so take them off, toss them in the gutter and stomp on them some and make them look as crappy as I could then go roll in the dirt and maybe rub on some cat $hit then go hijack a grocery cart or just use a normal pack. Few folks pay much attention at all to a homeless bum, especialy if they seem a bit 'off' and no cop wants one that stinks to much in their car. :D Bums, waiters, servants and taxi drivers are invisible, when I used to wait tables in a nice resteraunt I heard tons of business men whisper things to the other guy at the table that would have got them a cell like Marthas, and makeing sure no one else was listening while I was between them filling their tea. :D Bums are even more invisible.

Good point MM, sorry im having a gun fight, no cat stink on me
    No really well thought out,
I tend to be like Melbo and cache. and leave lots of bait for them to take if they do show up.

For me its a bit different deal than that though since I would be bugging home FROM where ever, so wouldnt know where to set the caches, also brings up more financial issues, any time I was living in the city it was due to no money to get out of the city so would be doing good to have one set of gear, let alone several sets cached.
Also a bum in a trench coat even in the summer dosnt raise much suspicion walking down the street carrying a pack or puching a cart. ;)

mm, I hadn't thought about the "bum" camo... That's a damn good idea.
I still learn something here every day. You are right about cabbies and servers.

Was just telling my daughter the other day when she asked me when her drink got refilled... Told her that was a very good waitress... Not in your face, not even visable.. we keep talking and when you look down. POOF, full glass of tea.

    Hmmm, BO-Cab as a BOV?

So, the 'mountain of a man from MO', pushing a shopping cart full of homemade explosives, handgun hidden beard, stinking of cat shit... I can't finish this post...

but it would work my friend [afro]

Still laffin,' how true. melbo, your word picture is priceless.

As a small city dweller recently set down here, I'm in re-think mode over what I would do in an event that caused DC to evac. I'm smack dab in one of the major ways west outa the metropolitan area, and would surely have to count on big time traffic. If here becomes untenable, as it may well become, hoofing it out looks like something to consider probable. Somehow, tho', a scrawny old bum pushing a shopping cart out Rt 7 past stalled cars full of irritable people would be odd --.

For my case, caching would work. I have a buddy at work that has a pile of acreage well out, about 50 miles from here, and really hard to find if you aren't local. Getting there would not be fun afoot, but could be done. I think I'll approach him on the subject sometime soon.

Even scrawney isfine, just be more creative (aka insane). Like I was mentioning in chat to Quig, find a road kil skunk and tie itto a string and drag italong with you and if anyone comes near you clutch the skunk, rub it and tell them they should ask if they want to pet your dog, then hold it toward them and tell them they can pet your dog. Big or small whos gonna come near you or bother you? Even what cop or FEMA guy is gonna aproach you for fear of haveing to put you in a car with them selves, much less touch you? If you appear to be a crazy homeless guy thats not agressive, NO ONE will notice what you do and think much of it and if you are dragging along road kill as a pet (the worse smelling the better) then if they donotice they will most likely pretend they didnt since if they make the colar they most likely get to haul you, who wants to ride with someone who smells like the a$$ of a skunk thats been dead for a few days? :D :D    ;) [yukface] Just look to the short comeings of human nature for simple solutions. :D b::

Roger, escape and evade would depend on being able to blend in. Gotta look like the other civilians, fatigues and rifle in your ruck until you get out of the refugee stream. I know if I am sitting, watching people walk past, or heading toward my position, a man with a full length rifle in fatigues will get a lot more attention, or a bullet.

greetings from nyc. i would just have to fold up and die if the unthinkable happened while I am here. 45 minutes to go 8 miles @ 6:45pm on a Sunday night.

Sushi Dinner last night for 3: $280

That was for 6 pieces a piece with 3 beers and 1 edemame (split 3 ways) and a small appetizer. Basically, we spent $100/piece on rice with some flavoring on top. (it was the best sushi I have had, but not 28 x as good as I normally pay @ $10.00 for decent lunch).

I've given this a lot of thought ...as I am on an ISLAND... a small island...right across the river from the biggest cache of nuclear weapons on the East Coast..I can see Kings Bay across the river...I can walk to my end of the island and see the Trident subs going in and out......

When we had to evacuate the whole state for Hurricane Floyd?? Which was the biggest SNAFU I have ever been in.....3 and 1/2 HOURS to go 10 miles in Waycross , Georgia...(I bought maps and learned all the back roads after that.... )

I'm screwed here...only 2 ways off the island...One goes in to Jacksonville...horrid city and I only go there when I absolutely have to...I am NOT a city mouse...and the other goes either to I-95 or out in the country to Hilliard and Callahan...small farming communities...where I have made a lot of friends...a LOT...especially one LEO who has 45 acres...and a range...he lets me come shoot out there...He is an officer with the County ,and trains their drug dogs...

I made sure to cultivate the friendship when I found out we thought alike on a lot of things....and his wife is a great woman..and friend....It is just this year I really got to know them...

the only thing I could do is try to get to his place...but how the hell do you get over a bridge, unnoticed...when that is where ALL the law enforcement is???

    a boat?

Yeah right....Put on full parrothead gear and act crazy? Grass skirt, coconut bra and carry a stuffed shark???  :D

Open to suggestions here y'all.....There IS a fort right behind me...It was a union"" stronghold during "The War" ;)

Spent a lot of time volunteering there...always nice to know the lay of the land around you...I did a few Spring and Summers there ..picking up trash and cleaning restrooms..painting flagpoles...whatever needed to be done...and getting to know the Rangers...

It is also full of alligators and snakes...mean snakes..Rattlesnakes and water moccasins...

Just what I want to be stuck in the woods with....NOT.

    Melbo's right....

    I need to move....

    damn.....

    I'm screwed..

Unless I pull out the "helpless Southern Belle" act....I can do it , if need be...Don't like it..but I can do it...I watch some of the women..and have learned a lot from them...

    Me & Scarlett...we're tight... ;)

    Well???

The boat might not be a bad thing if you needed to not be seen by LEOs and such, being early out (prior to being ordered out) would be a big help and just take the bridge, as long as can still get out by vehicle then if not doing anything to draw attention I would just put any guns in the trunk just before comeing in sight of the bridge (in case they want to glance in the passenger compartment), drive to the main land and out of site then put them back in reach and go back roads to where ever needed. Now if avoiding them were more important then a small boat across the water to the main land at night would be my thoughts and hoof it from there, or better yet have a bike that could go across in the boat with you and maybe a fold up cart to put supplies in an bike it rather than have to walk.
Of coarse the best solution if an option would be as mentioned, MOVE and be in an area with more routes of egress.
