Complaints about the alleged 'War on Christmas' seems to be starting earlier and earlier each year... ( much like the sale of hot cross buns in February ) The illegal annexation of the Winter Solstice / Saturnalia by Trinitarians will be resisted by stout hearted pagans everywhere! Some reactions to the Ypsilanti Tree Lighting are symptomatic of the grievances and victimhood of some theists (and some non theists), bemoaning the lack of respect for the dominant culture's religious and secular cultural traditions. That's the thing about 1A, the freedom to associate, and express one's beliefs peacefully (if noisily) in the public square, no matter how disagreeable, is constitutionally protected.
Yep, freedom of speech is one of those protected things. We can't and shouldn't cherry pick what someone should and shouldn't say. I don't have to like what they say or even agree .. but they should be allowed to say it anyway.
Indeed, I think that Christian evangelist preachers burning the Quran is in poor taste (indeed, burning any books is in poor taste, unless one is dying of hypothermia), but provided their bigoted pyromania is not likely to risk life, limb, or damage to property; and that the resultant mess is responsibly cleaned up afterward...their idiocy and disparagement is upon their own head(s).
VT, I agree these people should be able to say whatever they want. But should they be able to disrupt someone else's expression (the tree lighters)? Say what you want, but don't disturb me or try to intimidate me if I'm expressing myself.
Freedom of speech is a corner stone of the Republic but when you interfere with others right to freedom of speech that is where I draw the line. Democrats preach freedom of speech as long as your speech conforms to their view and that is not freedom of speech

I think it is more of becoming what they say you are anyway - so - why not? Have we not tried every way to placate and appeased these people? My blood boils when I hear politicians say --as an example "Trump is a threat to democracy" We don't have a democracy it is a representative republic and these worthless politicians don't seem to know that and the people who vote them in don't know it either . The founding fathers were smart enough to see a democracy could lead to abuse by the 51%. I have come to the conclusion any form of government will become corrupted because it attracts the power hungry, the corrupt, narcissist, and liars.

The thing is we've seem to lost the capability to remove those that are the above. A professional politician, such as Biden, that is in government 30+ years accumulates way too much power. I've come to the conclusion that our system is simply not working. It's not that the design is bad or not working as designed but simply outdated and cannot keep the modern, professional politician in check. There needs to be an additional couple of amendments which would improve our control immensely. First, a Balance Budget Amendment, would pull the teeth of overspending and a Term Limit Amendment would cancel these lifelong politicians. I mean, they limit the President term to 8 years so why not Senators and Congressmen? I have never understood this... Just these two amendments alone would change our government almost overnight. A couple more, like campaign funding limit which would put all prospective politicians on equal footing and stop much of the massive donations to buy votes. Anyway, just some morning thoughts...wishful thinking.
