A group of blacksmiths have set up a page of downloads of old books on blacksmithing. If the SHTF we would be back in that time period and least we forget I am using my grandfathers machinist tools and although they all laughed, they passed the tool room standards and some of the brand new Chinese tools would not. In addition they were reusing scrap in many cases or going back to the bar or rod stock. Blacksmith Books – Free Downloads – BAM Site
Thanks Duane ,, I'll be looking thru that. I remember walking a great-great uncles old blacksmith shop as a kid of maybe 6 yrs old. He had on old tractor engine mounted behind the shop,, with a wide belt,, I'm guessing 20 feet into the shop running equipment. My Dad ,, Grandad,, and this fella was making sure I wasn't running around in there ,, a lot of stuff to get hurt on . But a few years before my Dad died ,, we were talking about that shop ,,my Dad said he had a book on Blacksmithing , that was worth a lot of money ,, he said he'd dig it out one day and show it to me. He had it hidden better than Mom's jewelry, coins, etc. My family got stupid after Dad died ,, I just threw my hands up,, told'em all to shove it up there ass ,, and walked away. I figure they pissed away a lot of money in stuff like that book, and other stuff. He had an old Craftsman/Delta Cast iron top table saw ,,, that he got from somewhere in the family, before I was born ,, he rebuilt the thing,, had the motor rewound ,,, it was super heavy ,, but that thing would saw wood like a hot knife thru butter . He had an old tool rep guy try to date the year the saw was built ,, the guy took the serial numbers to date it ,, when the guy got back with him ,, he said nobody in the corporate office could find a manufacture date ,, they said all numbers he had predated numbers ,, before the company started keeping numbers. But they said it was built before the 30s. Anyway ,, got off subject ,,thanks for those references.
gooooood list - plenty of new ones that I haven't seen before >>> add them to the database if you haven't looked over the Survival Library list of blacksmithing & old metal working - it's a worthwhile pile >>>>> Smithing | Survivor Library Forging_and_Casting | Survivor Library Machine_Tools | Survivor Library
I admit I was willing. but I have to someday stop going down that rabbit hole of the survival library. I reread that book on simple boats by Beard, a couple books on steam engine boats and building simple boats, Two or 3 books that I have read before on smithing, than reread some sections on military books on machining. By then it was 2 am and past time to go to bed. A pleasant day but it went very quickly. Thank you Illini Warrior. I don't know how to add them to the library or even if I can. If someone can do it I would appreciate it. I am 87 but still take selected material and put it on a cd. Lost too many computers over the years to depend on them and do not trust the cloud. Have had a Faraday cage with a solar panel, battery, cd player, simple computer and small monitor for years. Up to a 5 volt system, using a raspberry pi 5, 5 volt cd system, and a 5 volt monitor. 1/20 the size and cost of what I started out with, but that had lights etc. The latest raspberry pi with a ssd has so many advantages and it is about 20 times as quick as the old Raspberry pi 3 were. The old 3 works great for a cd player however. I have a love hate relationship with Linux. It has almost limitless advantages once you learn how to use. But unlike dumbsoft and Gates, you have to put the time in to learn how to use it. I have picked up the small batteries, often with 5 to 10 amps storage, for cell phones etc. Small, fairly good self discharge rate, and a good number of recharge cycles. A PI, cd player, and monitor will us only about 25 watts and I have a small sectional solar cell that puts out 100w and a controller that puts out 12 v into a small lead acid battery and a converter in the controller that puts out 5 volts as well as chargers that convert the 12 volts to a 5 volt charge on the computer batteries. Crude, but can use any car battery or home built 12 v charger system if shtf and I have 3 old dams, one 18 feet high, within a half mile and water wheels are easy and so are old generators. But I am way off subject, other than the reason why we have our dearly beloved Survivor Library. Guess I will always be the boy reading the rest of one of Beard's books under the covers with a flashlight when I was supposed to be asleep, Found out 15 years later that my parents always knew and just made sure that there we fresh batteries in the flashlight.
