It seems they are not going to take the time to teach these couch potato incompetents how to do things they should have learned as a kid.
I would think it reasonable to require some personal training to prove one's own investment in the core.
With schools not requiring PE something has got to change.
During WWI so few men recruited knew how to handle a gun they were issued BB Dasy guns for training . Sad state of affairs when liberals have their way sissifying our men. first appeared in All outdoor .com

Land navigation is too hard, and grenade throwing is too dangerous? Is that it?

More dangerous than wandering into a mine field? How about getting your squad killed by some other unit that thinks you're the enemy? There's no second chances to get that right, but you might live long enough to think about it. Grenades? 4-5 seconds is all you get.

@arleigh, can you cite a source?

Most of these kids that they are taking in the Army, are NOT HS Grads, and come from the Big Cities, looking to get out of the hood... You do NOT learn Land Navigation living in the city... or even in the Burbs... it just isn’t that hard to chuck a Grenade, unless you happen to be A FUMBLE FINGERED IDIOT...

In the 1940's we learned land navigation in the Boy Scouts, both day and night, compass, using sun and stars and dead reckoning. Was a time when I could give north with the sun and a watch and it is amazing how thick the clouds have to be before you can no longer get even a glow for location. Lots of time for short periods of time we were taught to use wind and cloud movement and the shadows with compass backup about once an hour and then trying to get a two or three bearings with the military compass and a sectional chart. The instructors were WW2 vets and they used to say that one of the reasons they were there to teach it, was because it could save your life. Camped out summer and winter in big old army tents, cooked food in cast iron dutch ovens, etc, walked 5 miles cross country along side a river or next to the ridge lines, etc and were taught what was edible, what was bad, animal tracks, etc, and not to skyline yourself, noise discipline, pack optimization, what food to carry on a hike, over night hikes, etc. Not at all politically correct as when we went hiking, usually as a treat they would set up a temporary range and we would shoot 22 s and they would supply the ammo. All the parents thought it was a great program and supported it instead of protesting and going to court. I try my best to keep my great grand children out of the present incarnation of the scouts.

You are only one EMP away from knocking out enough GPS satellites to have to do it the old fashioned way. I can't believe this.

The continued sissification of our military by the liberal/socialist.. And the hanging question is, to what end? The denial of a basic skill to the recruit will ultimately mean a weaker and less adaptable soldier.. Gentalmen, we are looking at the creation of a army on par with the french of pre ww2..

We can all reason out why they want to continue with the pu$$1fication of our young men and boys. To continue the weakening of any possible resistance to their ultimate goals. And to create societies of sheep. They will do what ever they are told, without question nor any thoughts of resisting.

Of course this is my own opinion, reasoned from my limited knowledge.

About 10% of the Marines that stepped into a grenade pit with me fit that description. Only about 2% managed to DROP the grenade during the throw, and only one moron ever managed to let the spoon go while still holding the live grenade. At least these knuckleheads got to handle a grenade, knew how much force it took to pull the pin, and learned the sound of the spoon flipping free. With a 15 meter casualty radius, so you really want untrained soldiers handling grenades?

This is interesting news at a time when the Army Times, Navy Times, and Air Force Times have the same message on the cover.

"Mattis to non-deployables: Deploy or get out."

Deploy or get out: New Pentagon plan could boot thousands of non-deployable troops

Just from what you mention, getting out of the hood and into the Army sounds to me like a decent plan to improve your life. If you're smart about it and the Army's smart getting that education while your'e in is a win for everyone. IF?

There are a couple you tube vids on grenade throwing fails. If they don't teach how, there will be more ---
Google "grenade throw fails" for samples.

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

The land Nav can still be easily trained at the unit level. It really was anyway. We were familiarized to it in the 80s OSUT for Infantry and made adept to that standard but the real proficiency came at the unit, in the woods and deployed.

The army requires that enlistees must have a HS diploma or GED certificate. Some state National Guards tried offering GED crash courses to try and coach recruits to GED success to assist recruiting when guard and reserve deployments to the sand box were common. My state tried a couple different programs but dropped them a few years ago.

Far too many kids today don't even know what a map is, let alone how to read one. Put a topo map in their hands and it might as well be a physics book written in Greek.

When I went to Army basic training in 1971, the half the barracks were guys from Memphis/etc, given the choice of jail or the army.

It's definitely not the same as it was before. Hell, these kids aren't even soldiers if we compare them to what we once were since they aren't broken down in boot camp and built up to become soldiers in the first place; they are only civilians with uniforms and multiple select fire rifles. I can't even count how many gangs I have seen operating and how much government property they must have been selling on the black market. Well, at least it will give the Rangers something else to do when they have to run rescue missions to get them out.

You've got to be kidding! No bayonets? I'll admit that the M4/M16 isn't the greatest platform, not like a Garand or M14, but still... .

Is this why they gave us squids a BIG compass and an M-79 ?

Disgraceful!!! First it was eliminating bayonet training. Then it was land nav, you know, because it was too hard to pass. Now it is grenades??? Wow! Simply wow! The biggest cause of failure at PLDC used to be due to land nav. Now these non-meat-eating, skinny jeans wearing knuckle heads can’t throw a damn grenade?!

My wife and I went to Target earlier today to buy groceries. I was the ONLY straight non-metro sexual guy in the whole damn place. This is society today! F’n pansies! The same kind of pansies that we plan to protect our nation?

And to think the elite want the populace disarmed....the actual deterrence to CONUS attack is certainly NOT today’s Army!

Well the enemy won't have to worry about guns , they will only have to hurle insults and the pansy's will fall down crying in the mud.
