I watch “Alone” and see “survival experts” grilling their meat, burning all the fat off. Don’t you think boiling into stew is the best long term method?

Generally speaking yes, for the reason you mentioned, saving and consuming the critical fat calories. That having been said, there’s an important factor to be considered, in palatability. In order to benefit from ANY of the calories, we have to actually eat the food, and for a lot of people, absent other additions to make it soup or stew, simple boiled meat is terribly unpalatable, whereas grilling is the normal method by which we eat meat, in most cases (roasting a close, but related second). I tend to use a combination of grilling and soup/stews when cooking outdoors in the backcountry, for that reason.

Man, you really shouldn’t use that saw right next to your femoral artery!

    Shut up, retard.

I could see carrying a small liquid fuel stove and some amount of fuel (less than needed for a full trip) as backup to something like a twig stove. The idea being the fuel stove would serve as the quick fire in bad/cold conditions. In 2+ person teams, one could carry the liquid fuel stove, another (or even both, they’re so light and small) would carry the twig stove Have you experienced with tie-wiring twig bundles and using them like the swedish log concept, without the metal plates of the twig stove?
