Nice breeding ground for insects. If you're far north, you'll need it a lot thicker, too...but if you've been off-grid as long as you say, you already know this.
My dad told me about getting a large burlap sack and pointed to a straw pile and told to make his mattress. This was in the army.
Had the same experience...they called it a palliasse...the trick was neither to under fill it, nor to overfill it, but that it could be capable of being fluffed up when given a good shaking. The Straw needs to be dry and free of mould. One can of course sprinkle the straw with aromatic dried herbs and with herbs that will deter insectivorous critters.
