There’s a lot of nonsense that gets spewed around about knife selection for survival and preparedness. Some of this is based on sheer ignorance: some guru in “WhoFlungPoo” kungfu designs a knife for “fighting” based on obsolete, fanciful notions of what a “knife fight” looks like, and it gets parroted by people who don’t realize the only fight Sifu has ever been in was when he got “swirlied” by the jocks in High School.

Or, some “bushcraft” or “survival” expert who never spends time outside of his own backyard, or a little 100 acre wood in the nearby state park, has specific opinions on the ideal knife, based on using it, in his specific environment, for a handful of basic tasks–or stuff that nobody who had to rely on their knife, without the option of walking back in the garage to grab a replacement–would ever ask of a knife….

Some of it is just based on marketing: a company builds a reputation because they build a solid, tough, simple knife. But, in order to catch more market share, they start adding “features” that are nonessential, and maybe even make the knife less effective as a knife….

The foremost “survival” experts in American history (although they didn’t call it “survival.” To them it was just “life”) all carried roughly the same types of knives for everything from hunting and skinning game for meat and pelts, to fighting off hordes of attackers. Those simple knives are still the best option out there–from both performance and cost perspectives.
