Working next to a lake that freezes over and having to work around in in it from time to time I rigged a 2-leter bottle with 100' of paracord stuffed inside so that I could throw it out to someone in the ice away from shore. With a little practice I could hit my target over and over. Fortunately, I never had the opportunity to use it, but it was nice to at least have that option if it became necessary. We had people trying the ice all the time during the winter so it worth the concern.
