A little history.
In the early 20th century medicines were predominately made from natural sources. The first recorded death from heart attack in US medical literature was in 1912. A hundred years later heart disease is the leading cause of death. Cases of cancer in the early part of the last century were so rare that each case made the news. Today it is the second leading cause of death in the US. So what happened in the beginning of the last century? Medicines at that time were made from natural substances. John D Rockefeller's oil monopoly, Standard oil had two major branches outside oil production. Plastics amd pharmaceuticals. They started synthesizing the natural ingredients in medicines and patenting them. Soon all medicines were patented pharmaceuticals. And as the population became sicker, the pharmaceutical industry became richer. The US today is one of the sickest countries in the world with the average person over 50 years old taking an average of 5 pharmaceuticals a day.
Big pharma is not our friend. They are not in the business to cure disease. They make thier money off of it. Forbes magazine listed 9 new billionaires last year. Every one of them executives in the pharmaceutical industry.
Big pharma companies set record profits last year while small businesses were going bankrupt at historic levels.
