I've been lurking for a while and saw a few posts that I figured could use a little pot stirring. Thought it would be a good time to join.

I'm not so much a survivalist- well I suppose we all are to one extent or other- we are all still alive after all. I live on an acreage in the central US, own a small business and maintain a very large garden and do have enough supplies and equipment stashed away for several years or more. My interests include anything mechanical with special attention to anything related to reuse or repurposing. Oh and politics.

Forums are about the only 'social media' that interest me. Don't do the Snapface or Twitter fakery. I am interested in personal, real world experiences from likeminded people that actually get out there, get dirty and mix it up a bit. That's what drew me in here. Not mentioning any names but the other forum that I have been frequenting is a precious metals forum that is devolving into an RSS feed, mostly fed by a single poster that clearly needs to get out of the basement and get a hobby. No opinions or experiences, just RSS feeds and an occasional, uniformed snipe. I truly hope this does not slump to such a place. Once I get settled in I am sure to find it as interesting as it now appears.

Thanks for letting me slip in.

Glad to hear from you. Agree on your take on a lot of the survival net forum's, I really have a hard time equating PERT planning,Maslow's hierarchy of planning, etc as really in my survival plans, now if you have any tips on keeping the deer out of my garden, can't eat them until after TSHTF or a good plan to stop late blight in potatoes and tomatoes, please share them with us. As a group most of us love gun, knife, old tools, re purposed items, porn as well as good scenery and dog pictures.

    Welcome, mate.

I don't think you have to worry about that happening here. Members here don't live in their parents' basements and think for themselves. And, most of them have a pulse - I think so, anyway. :D

Well this is not been tried by me but a friend tried bar soap hole drilled through and set about every 10 foot held up by T posts around his garden, well it seemed to keep the deer away but, now his cows are eating the soap. if you don't have cows that can get into your garden well it was just a thought.

Good to see ya! I think you will find Survival Monkey is a friendly, not too serious forum. I came here several years ago after getting disenchanted with another forum that had become a pissing match for guys who thought they knew everything about everything and anyone who didn't do it their was was a "sheep".

    Welcome.

Mostly grow tomatoes (down to 50 this year from the normal 70), potatoes, beets, radishes, cucumbers, melons, onions, eggplant- the normal type stuff. My strategy for loss to rabbits, deer and the usual blights and cucumber beetles is to just plant a bunch of everything. We don't use chemicals. On a good year we give lots of produce away. We have lots of room and a 5 foot, 3-point tiller so planting large is no big deal. My Jack Russell Terriers keep the rabbits in check.
