Just looking for some suggestions to help make the curb appeal of this home a little better. I was thinking about painting the house and trying to go either cape codd or english cottage style with it.
Add shutters, real or decorative. Sidelights for the front door, too, even tho' they would represent a security risk.
Definately needs shudders and ya need to do something about the upper windows. With the color of the rest of the house and the roof, they seem out of place.
Trim the top of whatever that big shrub is to make it level and remove the weed growing through the top of it. Get a couple flats of cheap colorful annuals like mairgolds and plant them along the top of the retaining wall and paint the front door a bright complimentary color. I agree about the shutters, and put the rubbish barrel in the garage.
Roof needs an overhang. I would add a farmers porch, shutters, contrasting roof, change the white trim to a color, shutters, remove the yew and replace with a variety of miniatures evergreens and miniature weeping cherry.
If it were Detroit, I'd say you are missing the security bars for doors, windows and the pitbull attached to the garage door. Nothing says curb appeal as security devices!
Seriously though Econ, Take a picture at night with the front porch lights on. You got a few security spots where someone could easily hide. Right next to the trash can, behind the shrub towards the street and possibly between the porch and shrub. Plus they could use the brick retaining wall for cover to move to the front of you garage. Low voltage lights In the retaining wall will go a long way to discourage, plus a motion detecting light that floods the driveway could be advantageous.
Sea neglected to mention the dual chain guns in the dormers and the pack of rabid dogs just inside the garage door.
Not bad Righthand. Way to take it to the next level. What does everyone think about painting the house? I know a lot of people are against it but the wife and I do not like the color of the brick. If we do this, we cannot change the color of the roof as it is only 8 years old and that would be plain dumb and expensive. What color might you go with for the paint? Also, Vis, great ideas for lighting. I was thinking something along those lines over the garage but putting lighting along the walls would make a huge difference. Keep the suggestions coming, this helps a lot!
I used to sell real estate. If the reason you're adding curb appeal is to sell the place I'd suggest not painting any brick. Once you get paint on brick it'll never come off completely. You may like it a different color but painted brickwork can kill potential sales. The best things you can do don't require a lot on cash, things like; keeping the lawn mowed, plant a few flowers, paint the front door and keeping rubbish barrels out of sight go a long way.
In that case, I'd consider enclosing the front porch as an airlock so someone at the door has to be standing in front of that large window, not behind that brick face between the front door and the window.
