The fixed wing drone was not shot down - it was jammed by a new system iin use by the USMC the new USMC jammer jeep. MRZR-mounted,, anti-UAS Marine Air Defense Integrated System The Corps is working on adding a "kinetic kill weapon" to the system Looks like the Corps in now in the 21st Century. Havta wonder what the Zoomies have in hand....
LOL Iranians are claiming that they aren't missing a drone, and that we may have downed one of our own unintentionally. Right, our military was spying on our own military, or our military has no way of identifying whose drone is flying around our ships.
Our drones use an encrypted SAT based control link, that comes from above, and is somewhat shielded from ground based interference... If our drones lose the control link they have preprogrammed evasive maneuvers, and are able to continue the mission for a length of time, before a “Return to Base” routine brings them home.... Iranian drones use ground based control links and are vulnerable to such attacks because of the antenna placement... The Iranians do not have any SAT based .Mil stuff because they do not have any SATs in orbit...
Nice little intel coup says me, likely intentionally done so as to ascertain their capabilities and see how advanced or lack there of, Iran is! Nice chootin Tex!
This thread brings back one of my pet peeves - how to electronically capture or destroy any drones used by nosy, nefarious neighbors, or "opposition" militia/bandits/LEOs during a SHTF scenario. One could add FLIR concealment/disruption to that as well.
The drone was 'killed' by a Directed Energy Weapon - a high power microwave shot. While the pew-pew sound was missing, it is just a short step to a MKIV DeLameter blaster....(H/T to EE "Doc" Smith) As seen by Hollywood-
meh, go after the soft squishy thing piloting the machine. Replacing machines is cheap. Soft/Squishy .. not so much.
Oh, I like that idea Visu.... Send up an IronHand and send a Shrike Missile back down the Control link Signal... and take out the Controller... cause If it was a US Drone, the missile wouldn't hit anything, but if it was Iranian, scratch one Transmitting Site, and maybe a few IRG Punks
I have found #3 shot in 3" high brass 12 gauge works very well on helping civilian model drones land.
Most commercial drones operate on a narrow frequencies, if you broadcast a stronger signal it will crash. FLIR can be defeated by a sheet of glass, insulation (Mylar) or blending in with the background temp.
