It could happen quickly............ pandemic

This morning I am reading stories about a Emirates flight that is in quarantine at JFK. Since the story is breaking I am reading up to 100 passengers are sick (who knows the real number). They are coughing and have fevers. Allegedly these passengers were sick before they got on the plane. If that is true then it is not plane or food related. The CDC is there and CTU (Counter-terrorism Unit) is monitoring.

Alleged person on the flight- A woman is live tweeting from the quarantined Emirates flight at JFK Airport and it sounds really, really awful

Emirates plane carrying sick passengers lands at JFK airport, officials say

I have always been concerned about pandemic, it is something that I think is a true danger to our lives. Look how easy it is for germs to be transported from one place to another. Sick person gets on a plane and lands in one of Americas largest cities. We read stories of hospitals being overwhelmed and setting up tents during a really bad flu season.

When I first came to Survival Monkey there were discussions and some where preparing for pandemic. Since we have many new people and today's incident is a good reminder; I want to ask, who is ready for a pandemic? Do you know how to sterilize, quarantine and all the other things to keep your family safe?

Here is an article from last year in Time regarding pandemic- May 15th, 2017 | Vol. 189, No. 18 | U.S.

Here is a pandemic kit list from Modern Survival Blog:
    21 Things For Pandemic Survival

That is a good list but I am sure there are other things that are needed.

If you don't want to be serious about prepping for a pandemic, you can buy one of these:
Pandemic Kits | Pandemic Kit | Emergency Pandemic Flu Kits I cannot believe that someone would buy that and think they are covered.

I hope all will be ok,, but this is something I’ve been concerned about for quite a while. Will be curious to find out what exactly is going on with this. Thanks for posting this.

Are you prepped a bit for pandemic? That list I posted said 5 gallons of bleach per person. I would need to store 15 gallons of bleach and it only has a year shelf life. I have 5 gallons of bleach now because I was having trouble rotating a large amount. Most of the stuff on the list was normal stuff one should have anyways but boxes of gloves and suits adds another layer to prepping. I only have a 5 pound bag of kitty litter and that is in the garage for spills.

Should not be a problem for isolated country preppers, but city preppers better have a BOL.

You can make lots of your own bleach when needed with pool shock. There are threads here about making it for drinking water purification. Just need to make it stronger.

Found it and it's yours @Motomom34.
    Let's talk bleach

Interesting regarding the lifetime of bleach - I had always assumed it was indefinite. You can make the sodium hypochlorate (the active ingredient) from salt with electrolysis. Perhaps this could be done via solar charging, but don't know if it's realistic/practical or not to augment a normal bleach supply.

IMO pandemics are near the top of likely SHTF causing events. If the pandemic is engineered it will likely be a virus with a short lifespan to ensure the vanquished land can be safely occupied or be engineered to be effective based on target DNA (China for example has reportedly developed critters that don't affect Asians but could have been cold war misinformation)

It's not a question of if.
    Only a matter of when.

It is what a policy of "Open Borders" will bring with it, and immigration has already created some health issues that were relatively under control for decades in the US.

But are you all prepared? Do you all stock gloves and have decontamination procedures in place?

Please note: officials are saying this illness came from Mecca. I guess there is a bad flu but that could just be a speculation.

But how many have hazmat suits etc???

Back in the early 80s,, while posted overseas with . Mil . We were instructed to shoot any dogs coming across our fields of fire as there was info of dogs being injected with diseases just for us. Never did see one.

Don’t have hazmat suits. Just gonna post up and try and take as many of them out as they ascend on my AO , then pull my 1 bullet Barney Fife escape method in case of being overrun.

Bleach lasts a lot longer, it just loses potency over time, so more is needed. It doesn't just turn to water on it's expiration day.
I am ready for such public illness as much as I can be.
One big factor is remaining holed up away from the general public, reducing chances for contamination. That's where our water and food stocks come in handy.
Remember a few years back, all those illegal invaders coming across our southern borders, their disease ridden kids causing disease outbreaks in schools? Thanks to the prior misadministration, NOTHING was done to check them for disease before they were allowed in.
Suddenly, the MSM dropped the story. Didn't fit well with the official agenda. I still wonder what, exactly, was done during that outbreak? Diseases we thought WE eradicated, suddenly springing upon our population

Talk about dropped story's, How about the Ebola guy in Texas that came over knowing he was infected and puking all over the people he was staying with, What happened to those people?

No procedures in place, here. I wouldn't even know what to do. I have a box of latex free gloves I use for working fiberglass resin and gun cleaning, but no full face masks with bio filter capabilities.

    What should I have?

Prepared? No. Not even close. No hazmat suits either. No respirator. I got a box of latex gloves, ~ 20 N95 masks (good for dust not plague) lots of antibiotics, and a couple bottles of the wife's bleach (she also stocks those Clorox wipes) but prepared for a real kicka$$ pandemic, not even close. What I do have going for me is space. I have 5 acres and my neighbors have 10 and 20 acres and I can go weeks without seeing another soul. We could easily sit tight for months. I guess my solution in a real life scenario would be to close/lock the gate and stick up signs that say I would 'shoot on sight'...not sure what else one could do.

Me? Zero. No preps concerning these issues.
But, this decision is due to geography. I feel the chances of anything of the sort happening here would be nil.
If I lived in the US? Yes, I would.

[ditto] Hole up and wait it out. Have most of the things they recommended except a biohazard suit and kitty litter, but will not need it here. I also bought some biohazard tape to put on the only gate coming up to the property. Should discourage most people.,aps,258&crid=1ORW6LUMT7QSN

@Motomom34 BTW that was a great article from Time magazine. I found it very interesting how they can 'map blood samples against more than 8 million distinct DNA sequences to see if they match any of the known pathogens on file.' Extremely interesting article...

I did notice that they has to even slam President Trump at the end of a pandemic article, as if it is entirely his fault that cut backs have to be made. I am so sick of journalists and all the media!
