    The answer is: NO, one pound of FFFG BP will NOT destroy a PC Tower and it's enclosed Hard drive, to the point that the enclosed data is UNRecoverable. Way to slow of Burn Rate. If you are seriously thinking of using Energetic Materials to destroy your computer, so that the Data is unrecoverable, you really need to use something that "Detonates" rather than a Material, like BP, that only Burns Fast. Use something that has a Detonation Rate of over 2000 Meters/Sec..... That ought to make it unrecoverable, unless the platter gets stuck in a wall, your guts, or something... ...... YMMV.....

    Thermite. On my Navy ship, the charges were kept near the Crypto gear...... JIC. Place on top, light it off, stand WAY back!

    Simply breaking the HD disc into pieces isn't enough these days. The IRS and others are darned good at forensics data recovery!

    Yep, Good Old Thermite, cures a lot of ills.... and NO ONE is going to get within a foot of anything burning with Thermite, to try and save it. I wonder if some enterprising entrepreneur will come up with a Self-contained package that one could enclose just above the HD, and triggered by a Keyboard Command.

    I just read a very nice piece, from a Lawyer type, that concluded there IS a BIG Difference, in the LAW, between being forced to turn over an Encryption Key, or PassPhrase, that is NOT written down, or stored somewhere, and one that is written down, or stored somewhere. Anything that is in your "Mind" is protected by the 5th Amendment, and can NOT be compelled. If the Key, or PassPhrase Is written down or stored somewhere, then it CAN be compelled, via Search Warrant, just like a Search Warrant can compel you to unlock a door, or room, or physical place. Just NEVER write down, or store, your Key, or PassPhrase, and you will be safe from this Type of intrusion. Just also, do NOT forget it, either.......... YMMV....

    This makes sense to me. Admittance of the pass code leads directly to incriminating evidence- that is self incrimination no matter how you slice it. I am certain the SC will slap this one around a bit.

    Besides, DOJ/FBI has the world's best forensic computer geeks outside of NSA. They can exploit any machine regardless of encryption. They should have to do it the hard way. Just like if I don't have the key to the locked cabinet that is searchable via search warrant... its pry bar time. I can't see any added charges because someone refuses to type the password. If you forget, you forget ;)

    We used to use the magnaflux machine to permantly zero out hard drives that might have classified info on them... when we finished with them nothing could be read... by anyone...

    I am the Property Custodian for my Office at work. When I get ready to surplus old PCs and copiers (bigger ones have hard drives!), I have those drives 'sanitized' by our hardware squirrels before letting the Warehouse guys take them. Being the Department of Education, we have a lot of 'personally identifiable' and other sensitive data on them. If that data gets out and is used by some perp, WE can be sued!

    Not everyone has access to thermite,fun stuff that it is, so I would recommend "poor boy's thermite" ! Just make a thermal lance...it WILL melt granite and any thing you would find in a computer...just say'in(y)

    Thermal Lance, better known as a "Burning Bar" Basically made of magnesium, Aluminum, and Iron Oxide. Once you light it, it burns at 8000F, and drops slag of Molten Iron. Will melt just about any Metal, except that stuff that is Ceramic Coated. Also not available to every John, Dick, & Harry..... ..... YMMV....
