Need a little help with a math problem for flowers

I generally grow Narcissus whites in water for random Christmas gifts.

These fragrant flowers are very leggy and tall. I read that if you use a 5% alcohol solution in the water the stems are less leggy. So i want to try this.

my question is for a half gallon of water how much vodka do i need to use to get to 5% alcolhol if the vodka is 40% alcohol?

in other words, what shoult the ratio of water to vodka be for 40% vodka to become 5% alcohol for a half gallon of solution?

Really appreciate any help.

 

It's early, and my math may be off, but it seems if you use a cup of vodka and a cup of plain water, that would cut the alcohol ratio to 20%......but now you have 2 cups of 20% solution. You'd have to add 2 cups of plain water to the mix next time to get a 10% alcohol/water ration....giving you 4 cups total. Add 4 cups of plain water to the mix and I think you end up with a 5% alcohol/water mix.

Oh....wait....you want a 1/2 gal exactly ?.....this would give you 10 cups total, or 2 1/2 quarts. Personally, I'd drink the extra pint , leaving you a half gallon.

To get EXACTLY a half gallon in the end, you're gonna have to start with fractions of a cup, meaning measuring down to the partial teaspoon level....pointing out once again how complex the English system of measurement is over the decimal based metric system.

Drinking the extra pint would help you get over caring about the math, I'm pretty sure.

 

1 cup off 40% vodka added to 7 cups of water should make it 5% alcohol by volume.. ,,, I think. Seems like a waste of alcohol to me ,, but that's just me.

Half gallon is ~1892 mL

5% if that is 94mL

94 mL is 6.3 tablespoons.

The trick is to convert the furlongs per fortnight to decimal....then apply arithmetic.

 

Or use a program found on the internet.

 

That is the route i went but it didnt seem right because ratio wise... when i solved for X% i got the 1:7 ratio... so thought i would ask for 'expert' advice.

Thank you for all of you who took a stab at it. I'm thinking the 1:7 ratio is correct but its not intuitivly obvious to me as the 4 cups of water to 1 cup of 40% alcohol.

The problem is... too high alcohol content kills the bulbs, too low and they get to leggy.

 

Buy 1/2 gallon vodka, drink half and refill with water, you now got 20%, drink half that and refill with water and you got 10%, drink half and refill and you got absolutely no need to water a bunch of damned flowers and everybody is pissed off at you anyway. so refill the damned jug, open a bar and serve them watered down vodka.

 

If the vodka is 40% alcohol it's eight times stronger than you need. (5% X 8 = 40%.)

There are eight cups in a half-gallon.

1 cup of vodka gives you exactly enough alcohol for one half gallon of the desired alcohol/water mixture.

Pour 1 cup of vodka into your water bucket, and then add seven cups of water.

Total: 8 cups of liquid, final strength: 5% alcohol.

Vodka is mostly too expensive for me now, but I like to remember the Good 'Ole Days.

Sometimes I'll take an old empty vodka bottle out into the rain, lay down in the gutter with it on my chest, and take a little nap.

I'm very respectable, now. When the police wake me up they just send me back into my house to dry out.

I miss going downtown...

 

Well good That's exactly what I had. I to 7 cups. Good thing you asked this question before I started drinking the alcohol,,,,

 

Strait up grain alcohol you can source at most hardware stores in the "Fuel" or "solvents" section, usually $6.00 for a 1/2 gallon, will do the exact same thing, just don't drink it! Wood Grain Alcohol can be used, but you gotta convert it, and that's super easy, just pour it through a loaf of sour dough bread a couple times, just don't recommend drinking it, though you can if you want, just don't blame me if you come down with a case of Black Skull, your all on your own then!

 

i have lots of cheap vodka on hand. Grain alcohol would be cheaper per oz but i would have to buy it
