Interesting study here... how true or accurate ? ? ?

Wow. The results of a new study conducted by researchers from the University of Cincinnati, Florida State University, and Pennsylvania State University are sending shockwaves across the nation.
Four researchers sought to discover whether or not political ideology could predict involvement in criminal activity, but what they found could upend our entire political and criminal justice systems.

Political ideology represents an imperfect yet important indicator of a host of personality traits and cognitive preferences. These preferences, in turn, seemingly propel liberals and conservatives towards divergent life-course experiences. Criminal behavior represents one particular domain of conduct where differences rooted

in political ideology may exist. Using a national dataset, we test whether and to what extent political ideology is predictive of self-reported criminal behavior. Our results show that self-identified political ideology is mono-tonically related to criminal conduct cross-sectionally and prospectively and that liberals self-report more criminal conduct than do conservatives. We discuss potential causal mechanisms relating political ideology to individual conduct.

The data was gathered through “self-reported” behavior and is therefore cannot be trusted as a fool-proof result, but it is instructive in explaining important cultural differences between conservatives and liberals. The data gathered and research presented seems to indicate a very strong correlation between political ideology and willingness to commit criminal behavior!

This dramatic chart is both compelling and astonishing:

The researchers do caution against assuming a “causal relationship between liberal political ideology and criminal conduct,” but they also observe that there is corresponding research that shows political conservatives are more closely associated with reduced criminal behavior.

There is apparent scholarly agreement that conservatives more strongly value social order, respect for authority, and social conformity and that conservatives are more religious, more conscientious, and demonstrate higher levels of self-control. These traits and values likely influence lifestyle choices in ways that better insulate conservatives against criminal behavior. Moreover, conservative narratives about “free will, personal responsibility, and morality may gel into cognitive scripts that condemn criminal conduct as immoral and worthy of social sanctions.

The researchers also point out that academics and philosophers are realizing more and more that political ideology may play a larger role in our daily life than most people realize. In fact, political ideology may indicate what a person believes, thinks, and does in more places than just the voting booth.

Overall, our study joins a growing stream of empirical assessments that document differences between liberals and conservatives. Collectively, these studies show the potent yet often unexamined role political ideology plays in everyday life. Political ideology represents more than disparate views on the proper role of government and adherence to refined political theories. Ideology reflects an assortment of correlated beliefs and narratives about behavior that are internalized by individuals. These narratives likely impact individual choices, making some choices more likely and other choices less likely. Criminal behavior may also reflect choices rooted in ideological narratives—narratives that promote or reduce the occurrence of crime.

Look at a map with the counties highlighted for which ones went Democrat and which ones went republican.
Then look at a map that has the counties color coded for more or less violent crime.
You will quickly notice the blue counties are where most of the crime happens, then you will notice the Republican counties have almost none.

No, the study would indicate that more politically liberal individuals tend to self-report criminal behaviour than politically conservative individuals may be comfortable in revealing.

    (underlining emphasis mine)

Given the social stigma attached to criminality, and all the judgemental attitude directed by social conservatives towards criminals...I suspect that there is likely to be a certain amount of under-self reporting of criminality by social conservatives themselves, which would tend to skew the research results.

I don't think many right wing conservatives will give much consideration to the limitations of the research study methodology, they'll just home in on the bits that their confirmation bias finds most appealing, and self righteously use it to slam the liberal left.

Or, from a different angle...are the more liberals more likely to self-incriminate? That would tend to fall into the liberal mindset I have observed...perform a criminal act, then brag about it until they are apprehended. [dunno]

Pretty much any data can be interpreted to reach any desired conclusion. I will say though that in my own private research the study carries a certain amount of water:
    • I carry a gun in "red" areas mostly for protection from four legged critters
    • I carry a gun in "blue" areas mostly or protection against two legged critters
    • Note that the blue (majority Democrat/liberal) areas are typically urban/metropolitan areas
    • Note that the red (majority Republican/conservative) areas are typically rural/agricultural areas
    • The only places I have been mugged are in my nation's Capitol (dense liberal/progressive area)
    • The only places I have been nearly mugged are large cities (dense liberal/progressive areas)
    • The greatest density of thieves is also my nation's Capitol as it is densely populated by politicians who retain power by distributing (stealing) money from producers to give to voters as payback.

But if one looks at the actual data on crimes and compares it with the areas that voted "blue" in the past election, it shows your "explanation" to be irrelevant and misleading.

The statistics referenced do not indicate causation. Little doubt that the colors overlap, but one could logically ask which came first, the liberal leaning or the crime? Which caused which? Or what else causes the association?

I am actually not even considering causation or which came first.

The numbers just verify that liberals are far more likely to be criminals...something I have known for at least 30 years just from dealing with criminals.

Well we have a idea put out by one group that states that you sit on your ass and let the nanny state care for you. You don't need a job because the state will give you free food, free housing, free medical, free education (free college? What the heck did you do with the FIRST 12 years of free education we gave you?!). You are not responsible for your actions. You can riot if you don't get your own way, etc.

Then you have a different train of thought, one that states you need to work for a living so you can pay your own way. YOU care for your children (and don't have a dozen or so that you expect the state to pick up the tab for by a dozen different partners). YOU obey the laws and rules, even if no one is looking. Don't riot if you don't get your own way. Don't smuggle "sugar" out of Mexico, or whine about it when you are caught, or it turns out to actually BE sugar.

Seems obvious which group would breed idiots that turn to crime and which would spawn people who pulled their own weight.

Anytime you have a group of people who believe the rules and laws of the land are just suggestions...... what would you expect.

Which came first? the Democrat or the criminal?

Please note some criminals have issues getting decent paying jobs after they have served their time. They try to feed their family and have to rely on assistance to make ends meet. I am not defending them but it is something to consider.

I don't think that underhanded skullduggery is an exclusively "liberal" trait, or political strategy.....The house Republicans did a good job of trying to scuttle the independent Office of Congressional Ethics just recently...they didn't exactly telegraph their move. The fact that a number of Democrats that were silently sympathetic to that bit of political "sharp practice" just demonstrates that politics is a murky, corrupt game few seem to escape the taint thereof. Pork barreling, requires intimate contact with dirty swine.

I don't think Strumpet has any problem with the OCE being scuttled, just that the timing was bad for an incoming "Republican" President who is heading a cabinet with significant potential interest conflicts. The OCE can expect to die a death of a thousand cuts over time, rather than a single act of spectacular public castration.

I like the way the Romans handled it. Pusishment was severe, but when served the person was absolved. Nothing like that is possible today, when a late bill payment ten years ago still sits in a database to follow you the rest of your life, let alone a record of incarceration.

Locally, Daves Killer Bread makes an effort to hire ex cons as "The" Dave served time himself, even though he relapsed into drug use and is no longer with the company. I think they will have to help each other in similar fashion, if not the alternative is to stay on the dole or revert to crime.

Among liberals I know , most tend to be lawless and rather do what ever they want till they get caught, rather than fallow the procedures of the law ,full well knowing them.
This observation applies to those in business and private individuals as well.
Conversely those I know whom are conservative, believe that they have a reputation to maintain of good standing among other conservatives.

Generalising from the sample of people one knows, may constitute a biased sample.....you should hang out with honest, wholesome, law abiding liberals. ;)

There are a number of conservative politicians who have been caught with their hand in the cookie jar over the years, apparently their reputation among their conservative peers ran well behind their greed, sense of entitlement and hubris.

Being a conservative does not provide an immunity to wrong doing.....graft, bribery and corruption is an equal opportunity occupation for some conservatives and some Democrats alike.

However the local (though non resident) board liberal would like to detract from the fact...a far greater portion of the liberal gang are criminals than the conservative side. Yes, you can pick out the fact that there are conservatives who break the laws, but there is a good reason why the liberal strongholds are also the areas with the highest crime rate...it is not primarily the conservative minority in those areas that commit those crimes. If we were to allow felons to vote, the prison vote would be Democrat by a large majority. (much like the "undocumented worker" vote)
