In these communities, we often discuss the importance of self-reliance and preparedness. One area that deserves more attention is medical readiness. I discovered a course called "Off-Grid Medical Training: A Practical Guide". It's tailored for situations where medical facilities are out of reach, focusing on practical skills to manage health emergencies independently. Highlights included: Treating injuries and illnesses with limited supplies. Understanding when and how to intervene medically. Building a functional medical kit for austere environments. I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts on medical preparedness and any resources you've found beneficial.
seems like a good idea... it has to help should it be needed... had to take a red cross emergency course while at MCAS Yuma AZ SAR
Frankly, I think it is one area (medical) that you simply cannot get enough training. Sadly, about all you can get is CPR and Stop the Bleeding courses, don't get me wrong, they're great but more is needed. Part of the problem is the legal system. Those that have the knowledge to train are afraid of being sued given our whacko, suit happy legal system or they don't have the time. For example, a guy takes a course and is taught how to suture with staples and/or needle and suture - yet - he does it wrong and it leads to complications. This situation has an ambulance chasing attorney licking his chops. They have an EMT course here (North Idaho) at the college (1 per year), cost is about $4000-$5000, maybe more, 6-8 months long, and always full. So, I've taken the Stop the Bleed courses about every other year, taught here by registered nurses that work at the hospital. I take CPR course also about the same time, at the college, about 4 hours, ~$75, it's taught by EMS Tech. I have numerous paper and eBook versions of "The Survival Medicine Handbook: When help is NOT on the way' and 'The Ultimate Survival Medicine Guide' (Both by Joseph & Amy Alton) I have numerous guides, military field manuals, and etc. from the Monkey's archives. Finally, I have some very good videos for stuff like using the Israeli Battle Dressing, putting on a CAT tourniquet My first aid kits are pretty well stock, just added some staple guns recently...I do need more Stop Clot sponges, that stuff expires... That's it. That's about all I can do unless I take the full EMT course which while I can afford it, would love to take it, I sort of feel bad doing so because most of the students are young folks looking to make a career of it, by taking a slot simply because I can afford it and have the time - well - doesn't feel right. Anyway, that's it.
This is why I don't participate in any sort of medical, no teaching, no informal instruction, no nothing! Folks that know me, know my past, are always hitting me up for "training" and I have to tell them all NO! It's not being selfish, it's like you posted above, it sucks, but I can't undo what's been done by others, well meaning or not, or simply ignorant of what the world is really like! It's why I don't share very much here on this subject! I have also been accused of being too out of date, or too "Old School" for these modern times, and that I should go back to school and learn all the newest and modern high speed shit, never mind what I learned and have used all these years still works the same as it did when I learnt it the first time! My poor wife has it worse, being a Doctor puts her in very high demand, and being like me, someone who runs to the sound of whatever, rather then away, tends to put us both at risk of everything, simply for trying to use our god given gifts to help others! I admire others for trying to help, but caution to be very careful with that help, it can and absolutely will be used against you if possible! Many states have some form of protections, but those will rarely ever help you defend yourself if things ever go to court, especially the Blue states, they HATE it when good guys get to help people, it ruins THEIR image of being the good guys!
If you join your local volunteer fire department or rescue squad you can get the training for free. Sometimes departments get together and sponsor evening training classes for their members.
Yes its hard to find information, and harder to verify it ! Also i always wondered the dual mentality of the medical world, the must always help even for free, OO that why the got a assistant the can send you away!. The utmost respect for the one who work in the poor neighborhoods even for free chapeau. The pharma industry make millions on medication that suppress, not cure, patent it and sell it so the price go up and the poor can afford them so the die! The most amazed am i be the we try to keep you alive (thanks), but than let you die miserable even for days (no thanks). I always wonder what would be the best way to end a life if you in your shelter and you or you loved one(s) are dying from A.B.C.Weapon effects or disease lack of water or food. But we to call a medic dostor We live in a deformed world. PS. Here in europe Doctor is a academic grade .
my 2 cents. if you can find a vol fire/ ambulance thats the best least cost option. 6 years vol ambulance, 10 vol fire. books are better then nothing but hands on is king. im not altruistic. i served for the hands on.,,,,, my free training list ett, emt 1,2 and 3. over 600hrs medical cme credits swift water rescue level 1&2 tech. open water scuba hi/low angle rope rescue level 1&2 tech. hurst auto extracation tech. firefighter 1 wildland firefighter sar i got a jtpa grant for certified nurse assistant,,not fire/ems related,, idiot i could have gone for registered nurse. i worked 1 year as cna for clinical experiance,, pt handling, long term wound care ect. libido crushing job. i paid for red cross pool lifeguard. was harder then i thought there is alot not on here. vol fire/ems is a great venue for training and experiance if you are in the service area. the bad,,,, the good samaratin act in ak covers you for liability up to emt 2 and all firefighter stuff or untrained emergancy helping. emt 3 has a duty to act acording to standard operating procedures,,,so you could lose your house. stick with emt2 or what is covered by good samaritan in your area. i wouldnt be a 3 again. i cut up my "i love me" coat and framed it for mom.
