A little mistake that can ruin a whole day at the range. Thank you Old Dude49 for the best posts of the day and thank you for the time you put in finding the modern day truths in a very concise format.
The way his head turns as the back of the action comes back it has to have hurt. Of course none of of us have made the mistake of not bedding the butt firmly in the shoulder. Took quite a while for the web of my hand to heal after the Colt 45 USAF pistol bit it and for the thumbnail to grow back after it stopped the closing bolt on the M-!. Knew better, just got complacent in both cases,
Should see what a .375 Weatherby Mag. spittin 340 grain bullets does to the shoulder if not mounted properly, that's 55 foot pounds of recoil to the shoulder, that's enough to dislocate the shoulder and do pretty significant tissue damage to the affected area! Had a cousin of mine touch 'er off claiming he could take any recoil any rifle of mine could produce, he learned that day, he was mere mortal, and a couple surgeries later, recoil became an issue for him!! LOL The trick to shooting that rifle is to lean into it and mount it like a shotgun, and when you touch her off, ya gotta push forward and let that recoil dampen into you, in other words, shoot it like you mean it! Also have the .500 Jeffery, THAT one kicks like a mule, you know it when she goes off, despite the weight and really good pad, it really hurts, but just like the .375, ya gotta lean into it and shoot it with purpose, if you do it properly, the pain doesn't stick around too long, and better, whatever was on the other end now has a half inch hole in it! Could you imagine a scope kiss from such a hard kicking brute? Holy hell, that could actually crack your skull and break the scope, either way, that's a sure fire trip to the E.R!
I've never seen a human nose do that before. I get that he didn't shoulder the rifle well, he had no idea and probably only shot a .22 before. But that nose *almost* defies physics. Deserves it's own tag.
