The Garden Planting Calendar (All Things Plants) Just put in your Zip Code and get a spring and fall garden calendar.
Thank you for posting the link, pearl. The site has a number of podcasts also, some of which would be relevant to self sufficiency gardening. The All Things Plants Podcast (All Things Plants)
On average, your frost-free growing season starts May 13 and ends Sep 18, I didn't think it was that long
I think this is an average- On average, your frost-free growing season starts May 9 and ends Oct 1, totaling 145 days. May 9 is really hopeful thinking but I do like the chart in that it gives a chart of when to begin indoor planting so that I am ready for when the snow leaves. We always get snow around the 1st of May, some years more then others but we always get a good last snow. Good find @pearlselby @tacmotusn with the length of that growing season, you could open a roadside produce stand. There's a hobby that would keep you out of trouble.
Staying out of trouble is no fun. I have 2 acres under main power transmission lines where I could garden. I love my trees so that is the only cleared spot. I need to run water back to that area, to supplement natural rainfall. Last but not least deer will have to be deterred in some effective way as well.
30 March-7 November here. Sounds about right for the start at least. We plan on breaking the garden up in about a month, same as last year. A green house is really on the front burner this year, but I'd like to try a fall garden as well. No one that I know down here puts in a fall garden. I'm thinking that it would be a good way to have tater and onions into the winter.
WHY WOULD YOU POST THIS! I STILL HAVE 12" OF SNOW ON MY DIRT! great link tho, consistent with the dates I like to use in my area. May 15 and ends Oct 25, totaling 163
In my area, I consider June 1st the last frost date to be on the safe side, and then I just check the seed packets to see how many days/weeks before last frost I need to start them indoors. Of course my goal for this year is to eliminate waste as much as possible, including space, so I plan to get into sprouts as well as switching to multi-level container gardening outside.
Thank you, @chelloveck!! I did not know about the podcasts. My friend sent this to me last year and we went by it with good results. I am very glad you all could use this.
