I'm watching the big winter storm develop on the Weather Channel and am about as prepared as I'm gonna get. Got gas in the cars, food, propane emergency heat, ice melt, phones charged, clothes and dishes washed, new batteries in the flashlights, and generator ready. They are forecasting some ice for our area, but the forecast changes by the hour and source...only time will tell. What are the weather conditions in your AO and are you prepared?
We here in North Florida always get the tail end of your northern storms. The Weather Guessers are calling for temps down in the high twenties Monday and Tuesday night, and around freezing the entire week. I too am as prepped as I can be, being disabled and mobility impaired. Plenty of food, water, batteries, charger bricks, guns loaded at the ready.
I've been getting ready,, heading out now to pick up a few things ,, chainsaw fuel,,, checking on my Coleman stove fuel supply,, topping off the truck tanks ,,4x4 active ,, gonna fill up some water jugs ,,, gonna cover up a pile of limbs and wood so it doesn't get soaked, so I can light up a big bonfire ,, I figure if everything around me is covered in ice ,, shouldn't have any danger of the fire spreading from stray embers ,, gas heat is topped off ,, propane is ready for the grill ,,, I'm ready as I need to be ,, I'll be fine ,,, or else,,, I won't be ,,,
I am ready in DFW area of Texas. I will go to town for eggs today, not to stockpile but because I am out. I will also bring in a couple of Mr. Buddy heaters and propane bottles in case the power goes out. It's just camping, really.
I hope you can fine eggs, because they are rare as hen's teeth around here, as is propane, propane heaters, bread, milk, etc., etc., etc..! Glad that I've got mine!
Well, I went to the store last night, more for the entertainment than I needed anything. No eggs to be found, some Karen yelling at an employee to "bring more from the back". I did test fire the generator this morning, found out my battery was dead. I do keep it on a battery tender, guess it wasn't up to snuff and I'll need a new one as I can't trust it anymore. Tried to charge the battery (was at 8v so I knew it was pretty much dead anyway), that just resulted in the fluid boiling. The fluid was high enough, guess it was just bad. Only 2 years on that battery, guess that's "normal" now. Oh well, if I can't get a new battery, I can pull start it. Stay safe if you are in the path of this storm. I'm near Memphis, depending on the forecast model we could have flurries, wintery mix totaling a couple of inches or 12 hours of freezing rain.
I'm in NW Alabama, and if it's snowing in Memphis folks around here freak out! They rush to the stores and buy all the milk and bread. However, the last 5-years of snow has made preppers out of a lot of folks. Now they have generators, propane heaters, wood stoves, etc., but many will lack gasoline, propane, wood, etc. Being prepared is something that you have to stay on top of for it to work, unless you enjoy running all over town like a chicken-with-your-head-cutoff. I'm ready except for one item, I could really use one more propane heater.
That's what you have to do, "think out-side the box" and "get off the beaten path. The big box stores might be sold out, but that small place that sells hunting and camping equipment might still have one or two. That small independent gas station might have some propane or K-1. The ethnic grocery stores might have the food items that you are looking for. Be aware of and use the resources in your area.
We could get anything from 6 inches to 2 feet of snow up here. I guess we just have to wait and see. A lot of people out and about, I have everything I need but an extended power outage would be very uncomfortable.
I'm not real sure what they're calling for around here ,, last I heard was supposed to be mainly ice,, they're speculating 1/4 - 1/2 inch . The ice is worse that the snow,, especially down at the bottom of the hill at my place. I've got food , heat and alternative cooking and lighting handled. I'll head out to the store tomorrow and stock up on beer ,,, likker cabinet is good.
up here in michigan we have an area where they measure the snow with a big ass 30 foot tall snow gauge.
They are calling mostly ice here in south Arkansas. I be prepped up, even have 2 escape pods pulled to the house. Its crazy out there. I have 2 tables set up in carport to stack meat if electric out more than 48 hours. 1/2 beef and 2 elk in freezers. Have plenty of canned chicken, axis, beef, fish, beans, etc etc. Wife baked a few loaves of bread, i am parching peanuts and making cookies tonight.
haven't had any extended sub-zero temps this year - soooo I had to do that cheklist >>> don't expect the expected snow to be any problem .... just a matter of sitting out this one really cold cold day >>>>
I guess a winter storm hits different down south than it does up here. We usually get a couple of weeks every year where it's below zero. And at least a few big snows that drop anywhere from 8 to 30 inches in a couple of days and at least two shittastic ice storms. That's like every year. Down south though, you can always tell who is from the northern tier during a southern snow storm. They are the ones driving on the streets in their cars wondering where everyone is and concerned that the rapture took place and they got left behind.
Yeah, our worse drivers are the transplants. They are used to plowed roads but we don't have plows here. Plus, we really do have more experience driving in snow because we drive around in it all day hoping to pull someone out of a ditch.
it's not only in the South >>> hard to believe the ghetto cities don't plow everything - no $$$$ >>> the residential areas get abandoned in cities like Detroit, Gary, Flint, - the residents have to park on the nearest major street that got plowed - noooo USPS home delivery - it's a walking lifestyle alllll winter long if Mother Nature fucks them up ......
up here we don't need the $$$$ - soooo we just teaze the hillbilly stumpjumpers by waving shoes at them >>> every once and awhile theres a half brain that gets a pair - fun is then watching them try to walk ......
here in coastal SC next week is looking to be unusually cold calling for low of 17 a week from Sunday. Been cutting fire wood just incase
