I have a big blue rain bucket for catching water that I have actually never used. It's just sitting in my back yard.

What's the most effective way to use these buckets? Do you dig a hole and put them in the ground?

How do you prevent it from freezing and cracking the bucket?

As long as the ice has room to expand out the top it won't put pressure on the sides.

Try it in the freezer with a paper cup.

Good idea. I like your setup Andy. I was thinking that I'd have the top on, but maybe I'll just leave it off and let it collect. That's probably the easiest solution. I'd need to purify it before use anyway.

A top will keep out the leaves and other detritus like dead birds.

Just make the top so it can lift off the rest by the expanding Ice, and not sealed to the rest of the container and you will be fine...

You can see that in my photo.....it lifted the frozen 'cap' part, the froze again under that.
