Raised garden beds are a practical option in a number of circumstances where growing in the ground may not work so well. This method uses hugelkultur to bulk out the base of a large raised garden bed...reducing the frequency of watering as the logs break down and act as a sponge water reservoir. The Bug shells / add to the fertility of the garden...I add prawn / shrimp shells to my grow bags for much the same reason.
My raised bed plans differ, I'm planning to sub-soil the site, add some natural fertilizers, organic matter, limestone, etc., then lay down some railroad crossties, add a foot of compost, topsoil, and mulch, and grow something. I'm planning on a drip irrigation and keeping the soil covered at all times with some type of mulch like straw or hay. If I plan it right, I will be able to use my tractor and sub-soiler to prevent future soil compaction. Hope to have raised beds for veggies, herbs and strawberries.
