LINK: Chinese researchers tout optical disk format with up to 125TB capacity This is potentially huge, but it is still in the development/study phase.
And, still, somebody will fill the darned thing with pictures of their kids and boring vacation trips.
Didn't the folks rolling out CDs 40 years ago say one day the Library of Congress would fit on one, they just didn't know how yet?
Amazing! So much in happening with technology, nanotechnology, Artificial Intelligence, storage, super computers, robotics...
During my state IT career, we had an automated laser disk system for storing/accessing Teacher Certification data. Each laser platter (housed in a protective plastic case) was the size of the old 33RPM stereo records. Then they came out with a new box housing platters half the size but having four times the capacity. We were initially doing a nightly backup onto 21 big mag tapes. Then they switched to a newer cartridge tape drive, using two cartridges! After awhile the backup was done on one DVD disk. The storage technology is constantly improving. Smaller media with much greater data density. I was amazed when I switched from doing my home PC backups from two or three DVDs to an external 1TB driveIn another ten years today's best systems will be antiquated relics. It's the nature of the computer field.
