Just got done reading Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times (Mother Earth News Wiser Living Series) by Steve Solomon Actually, I just read the whole book twice. It's that good, and it's probably the one gardening book every survivalist should own even if they hate reading. Solomon can only be described as a seed and gardening nerd. He founded and subsequently sold a successful seed company (still in business, but not on the list) and he has, by choice, subsisted on his own garden for decades You'll learn (among other things) a great deal about buying seed in that book, and I would recommend everyone read it before patronizing any of the suppliers on the Mother Earth News list. Most of them are probably just advertisers, and while I didn't crosscheck, I don't recognize any of them from the list in Solomon's book. Ever since I started gardening and storing seed, I've purchased my seed from a wholesaler that primarily supplies market gardeners and farmers. They have a 15,000 square foot building, and they built a building within that building in order to store their seed in exactly the way Solomon suggests a seed supplier should. Having toured their seed storage building, reading that part of the book really made me smile! (It's always a kick to know exactly what the next paragraph will say...) Also, they always give me current (<6 months old) germination rate info from their own lab, even when I buy less than a pound of a variety. None of the seed they sell is over one year old. That stuff gets sold off to seed packagers. I had always intended to try Seed Savers Exchange, which IS on the list and seems quite credible. Now that I've read "Gardening When it Counts" I understand the potential problems dealing with SSE and I'm glad I never got around to it. I'd say that (having had no clue beyond what the seed store owner told me years ago) I was dang lucky to have found this particular supplier. One more tip - NEVER buy a canned assortment of survival seeds. NEVER. You'll know all the reasons you shouldn't after reading the book!
. How about sharing the 411 on this particular supplier. I presently have on hand about 15 books queued up to read, 2 more enroute, and probably 26 or so on the reserve list at the local library. Inquiring minds want to know. Please....
