I know we've got some folks out there ,, I hope you all are safe from the recent flood that passed thru there ,, and my thoughts and prayers for the families , and those taken by this storm . God Bless you all ..
Truly awful. One girl was rescued several miles downstream clinging to a tree trunk. I don't hold much hope for the rest but am praying for them and their families.
Been watching bits and pieces, prayers to the ones caught up in this flood, It's my understanding someone was being paid to watch conditions but no warning was issued, Heads will roll soon.
All the kids living in Travis Co, TX are here (AK) for a 50th anniversary celebration for my DW and I.
The loss of life is appalling, and my prayers go out to the families and victims! Though not in that specific area, only near, we are in good shape. These Hill Country rivers are noted for heavy flash floods when it rains especially anywhere near 5”+ so most of us pay attention to the sky and weather warnings so we aren’t caught. This happens from time to time and is the cost of living near a river. Having said that, if I could afford it, I would have been living there and been wiped out too. While I don’t have all the facts, usually, there is little blame to be spread. While a tragedy, these things happen and need to be planned for by the individual. Situational awareness and planning can and have saved many lives. Again, NOT blaming anyone, and my heart goes out to the victims and their families. Jim
Bad situation. I'm gonna take up for the Gov for a minute though. Even if the alerts had been sent sooner, (A) hardly anyone keeps a NOAA radio nearby and on and (B) not many people have their cell phone on at midnight and finally (C) a large percentage of people would have just ignored it and drowned anyway. I see it all of the time here with the alerts we get for everything. I do feel really bad for everyone involved, especially all of those kids. People need to start being aware though.
We got some new sirens installed nearby. Several weeks ago during a Tornado watch/warning, they blew for about 5-6 hours straight. The next evening, same thing. There was some talk in the local paper that they are reevaluating when they be used.
Truly a sad situation. I heard reports that the Austin FD was asked to pre-stage to help out but the chief refused to do so, even refusing to send help. That should be a termination level action in my opinion. Also, any of these camps or RV parks along the rivers that are prone to flooding, especially these flash floods, should have had the NOAA alert radios on and monitoring. Hell, I live in an area that if we flood, the entire county would be flooded and I get NOAA alerts for flood warnings and watches in the area. These camps and RV parks literally have lives in their hands and should be accountable to those in their care. I understand and the girls camp at least one of the owners was killed in the flood, and how many young girls lost their lives. This is beyond sad and heartbreaking. Earlier this year our NOAA radio was going off so much my wife wanted to unplug it, but there is always that one time when you will need to hear that warning message. I live far enough in the county that we don't hear the sirens from either of the closest towns, so that radio is my first warning.
"Austin FD was asked to pre-stage to help out but the chief refused to do so" ,,,, not making excuses, but when i was squirting water and cutting up cars i was chomping at the bit several times but not toned out due to mutual aid agreements. it sucks and is about equipment/personnel leaving their service area and getting sued if they are toned out and are out of the area,,,, and money. who is gonna pay. all that should have been settled way before hand. no good way to spin it. or he could just be a dick, iv seen that too. really sad.
