"President Trump announced that he plans to build a new fleet of Navy battleships, forming what he described as the Pentagon’s “Golden Fleet.” The president said he has approved construction of two massive new battleships, with plans to build 10 quickly and eventually expand the fleet to 20 or 25." @Ura-Ki Well, sir, I guess the President was listening. I am wondering if his administration will be offering you a job, so we won't be seeing you around the Tree as much... For those of you that don't know, Ura-Ki as constantly and consistently ranted long and hard for the return of the Battleship and apparently, he was heard, loud and clear, to the tune of 20 to 25 ships. LOL! I'm hoping they also accelerate the construction of the Virginia-class attack (SSN) and the Columbia-class (SSBN) submarines.
If the Navy could only design and build a warship that preforms as intended. we currently have aircraft carriers that can't launch aircraft and a whole class of surface ships that have to be towed back into port regularly.
if you watched the entire press conference - much more than just announcing the build of new battleships >>> TOTAL revamp of the entire US manufacture of military orders >>> firm bitch about the USS Ford build and current timeframe of combat aircraft builds .... kicking EVERYTHING into high gear - bringing in a co-op with the South Koreans and the re-opening of the Philly Naval Yard - new frigates are going to be bulk built - cookie cutter assembly line manufacture ...... Trump pulled John Phelan into being Sec of the Navy >>> guy is the most brilliant of ALL Trump's Wizz Kid Cabinet - real azz kicker & get it done success .......
I think we haven't been paying attention to the war in Ukraine. Big ships great for projecting power ... but a liability when a million dollar munition puts it at the bottom of a harbor or sea. I'd not want to be a sailor in the future.
Not really a battleship, more like a heavy cruiser with big guns, rail guns, lasers, hypersonic missiles, cruise missiles, helicopters and VTOL aircraft, maybe even room for Navy Seals or Marines.
As a Marine in the 80s ,,, I never liked the idea of being on a ship ,,,General Quarters gets called ,,, and I had to run to the belly of that big coffin ,,, f'k that ,,, I'd rather take my chances on the deck with a slingshot ,, than be stuck in the bottom of a tin can ,,,
Now that ^^^^ I can understand. Yeah, to be honest, I don't know much about naval strategy, so I also wonder about why these battleships are needed when it seems submarines would give you more bang for your buck. I do wonder if the era of aircraft carriers is over. I think they have a place, especially in peace time, but they seem to me to be too vulnerable and needs too many ships to provide security. However, I don't even pretend to know naval strategy, tactics or capabilities.
as it turned out >>> the Marines on the revamped New Jersey offshore Beirut - got the better hand than the shore barracks - ya never know .....
I could be wrong,, but the Marines on the Jersey were the ships security detail ,,, so they would have had nicer ,, more permanent quarters . My short time on Naval ships was on the LPH Guam ,,, Helo and troop carrier ,,, us Marines were stacked in bunks 4 high ,, in the belly of the ship. And we went into general quarters a few times ,, and unless you had a Battle Station ,, you went to your bunk,, and we're locked in until the threat was over. I was in Beruit back then ,, flew out to the Jersey for a Christmas show put on by Bob Hope ,, and crew . That Jersey was a nice ship ,, it was clean ,, painted up ,, taken care of ,, I would say it was at least one of the " Pride of the Navy " ships . Either way ,, no matter what ship it is ,, I wouldn't want to be locked in the bottom of the boat under a battle situation. I can pass ammo ,, whatever,,, anything but sitting in the bottom of a boat . On another note ,,, I did some work for an older fella and his wife. The man had a picture of the USS Enterprise hanging on his wall . We talked for a while,, or I let him talk ,, I think he told me a few stories that he may not have told anyone in quite a few years ,, and I think he just wanted someone to talk about stuff that another Vet might understand. He said they went under GQ's once in WW11 ,,, and he wasn't able to get to his combat duty station ,,, and he ended up getting stuck in the ships laundry room . He said there was piles of bundles of dirty laundry,, and during the battle they were in at the time ,, a Japanese plane must have been in a nose dive ,, and released a bomb ,, that hit the ship ,, went thru the ships deck ,, down a few floors ,, and landed in that pile of dirty laundry ,, that he was laying on. And he had to sit there and look at that bomb during the whole battle ,, just wondering when it was going to go off . Luckily,, it never blew ,, but ,, it's a hell'uv'a story to live thru .
This is why: Navy Fleet Strength by Country (2025) Can't be second place, it sends the wrong message. Of course, if you go by a more accurate representation by tonnage, the USA is still way on top. Navy Fleet by Tonnage by Country (2025) And we should take into consideration the practical applicability of such technology, where it comes from, and the impact on maintaining these fleets. Most of what we see and hear is PR, it's smoke and mirrors. Long before any of this new proposed battleship ensemble will ever be serviceable, Trump will be gone and we will be over the horizon chasing new ghosts.
